Chances of getting rescinded?

I recently posted this as a post...but I'm still getting used to CC so I'm posting it here in hopes of getting more input...

I have a question and I need no judgments. I only seek advice at to what to do at this point. I don't need to know how stupid I am because trust me, no one can feel as stupid or guilty than me right now. I feel bad enough already so please, I just need some advice.

I recently got charged for shoplifting. I'm 17 and I am awaiting all information at this point. i was cooperative and asked if my high school or the colleges I applied to would be contacted and the people who work at the dept store said that they wouldn't contact any schools. How this might affect my chances of getting rescinded? This is my first offense and I'm a juvenile. I know I was stupid and I accept any consequences however I really am just concerned about this hurting my chances to get into college. Please advise and don't judge or tell me how stupid I am, because I know it was a dumb thing and I'm punishing myself enough right now. So please just tell me what you think of my situation. Thank you.

Just out of curiosity, what were you stealing?

clothes for an art project

Oh, I see…

…uhhh? Okay?

It all depends, really. Who knows.

The cituation is real unclear at this point. I dont know exactly what is going on. All i know is the people who wrote the report said no schools will be notified. but I’m still worried…
I’m not sure how harsh the offense/charges will be based on… I dont know…i.e number of shirts, previous records, etc (not saying this is the case just examples)

They were just shirts to print on

Well, I’d stop shoplifting before it becomes an addictive behavior.

I guess try to cooperate as best as you can. You may still be safe.

of course! it definitely ends now.
if it seems i may still be safe then you just made my day
thank you.

p.s to other readers…i’m still looking for as much advice as possible.
thank you.

Hmm. It seems as if you haven’t learned from your mistake and took that second chance for granted.

You’ll just have to take them at their word.

Are you ■■■■■■■■ us or are you like a kleptomaniac? Perhaps you should see someone…

like i said…i wasn’t looking for any judgments or put downs. trust me i am already punishing myself enough at this point. perhaps it was a problem for me but it wont be anymore. all i am looking for is some input on my situation at this point. granted it doesn’t look good but i was cooperative and from what i’ve heard from other cases i got off somewhat easier than them. just some input and advice at this point would be appreciated. thanks.

Police report to your high school -> your high school puts this on your disciplinary record -> the disciplinary record gets sent to your colleges at the end of the year. This is what you should be worried about - obviously, the store themselves won’t report your violation to your colleges (???).

Can you capitalize the first letter of your sentences and your I’s and ****? It’s annoying me. :P. But honestly, just take life as it is, you already screwed up and just hope for the best. Could have just asked for the clothes for an art project, I don’t know how these two correlate when you’re buying white tee shirts, I assume?

For future reference, if you need white tee shirts for an art project, a lot of companies/local businesses will give you them if you just ask. There’s no need to shop lift.

^Indeed. White tee shirts cost nothing to make.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to annoy you. I’m just nervous and am typing too fast, I figured it wasn’t really important to capitalize. But if this is better for you I will do so. I suppose there was a lot I could have done differently, but at this point I didn’t. Lesson learned.

Will the police report still be sent if I asked the cop who was taking the report, if my school was going to be notified and he said no? This is where I’m confused because both the cop and people who worked at the store stated they weren’t going to notify my high school or colleges, but I’m curious as to whether it still might be sent later by a different party at a different time perhaps?

I was also advised by other CC members to report it to the schools myself…would that help or hurt my situation though?

I wasn’t looking for white tee-shirts, I was actually looking for a specific kind of tee-shirt, or else I would have gladly gotten them elsewhere.

That’s actually much easier to read. haha

If you didn’t report it (there’s a spot on the app for you to do so) and they find out, then it’ll be a huge mess. A lot of people recommend admitting your mistake and showing how you have learned and grown from it.

I suggest that you report your action. It will make the situation more simplistic and it will probably clear your conscience as well.

Right now I’m waiting for admission/rejection letters and this action was AFTER I sent in my applications. However I have already been accepted to a few schools.

So I guess I’ll just wait till I find out more information on the charges?..is it looked down upon if I contact colleges about it months after the action? Because I wont find out any information for a few months.

Well, I think it would raise serious concerns - whether your admission would be rescinded, however, depends on how good/serious/selective the schools you got into are. Some schools (I would imagine the ones at the level of Columbia or higher) would likely revoke it if they found out, because you did steal and they could easily find someone else on the waitlist with the same stats who didn’t have stealing in their past (it’s seriously bad publicity if they knowingly admit someone who stole and if that person steals from another student, which to them will be a perceived risk of not revoking admission).

Some other universities might not particularly care if they found out from YOU (and they should find out from you if it seems inevitable that they’re going to found; write an apology, say that you’re beating yourself up for it, say that there’s no excuse, what you did was wrong and that it’s never going to happen again). But don’t EXPECT them not to revoke your acceptance if they find out: even if it’s you who reports it to them, even if you say you’re sorry, they still have a right to say no and not want to risk the safety of their students (I’m not making a judgement on you, but this is how I think a university is going to/should look at it).
