Chances of me entering a UC/Cal State School

Hi, I currently have a 83% cumulative average (weighed on a 4.0 scale). I'm a Junior as of now, I have two more semesters and two more in my Senior Year. My projected average should be around a 87%-88% by then. I did really bad my Freshman year and my grades skyrocketed from then (except I failed one course in Sophomore year, not such a great math student also.) I'm taking AP English Language and APUSH, planning go all out APs for my Senior year. I took the SAT once and got a 1550, if I get a 1700-1800, along with a correlating grade on the ACT, what would be my chances into Cal State school and a UC school? I am taking one club this year, planning to take two next year.

*Keep in mind that OP is from NY, I won't be expecting to go to a Californian HS/College until the next school year.

Thanks.

I think you are a reach for all UC schools (UCLA, USC, UC Berkley, UCSD, University of California). I’d say you are also a reach for Cal State because you have minimal EC’s. If you can bring up the SAT you should have a shot. Still say low reach.

I’d say you have a decent shot at UC Riverside, Merced, SC, and SB. If you’re looking at Irvine and Davis you might want to retake the SAT/ACT for a 2000+ score. UCB and LA are high reaches.
You have a good shot at all the CSUs except for Cal Poly SLO which is a reach.
You should work on your ECs. Its not a big deal for CSU and the lower UCs, but if you’re hoping to go to Davis, Irvine, LA, or Berkeley, you’re gonna want to improve those.

@MBenz23 ECs? Can you clarify on that? I’m not so familiar with College terminology.
I wouldn’t say I would be able to make schools like UCLA or UC Berkley (lets be real someone with a 83% weighed average wouldn’t be able to make it unless you have an outstanding college resume.)

@YeezusBasedGod. Yeah. EC’s means the extra clubs and activities that you participate in. chance me please

All UC schools except Merced and Riverside are high reaches. CSU is a match though.

Your senior year wont help you because UC only calculates GPA 10-11 grade.

not sure where 83% fits on a 4 scale -
It looks like you are a B+ student with an average SAT. If so, UCs are out of reach for you.
If you’ve completed California’s a-g requirements, there are probably 18-19 CSUs that would be glad to have you. All the CSUs but Cal Poly use the same simple formula to determine your admission.
• Did you complete the a-g requirements (if not your GPA and SAT don’t matter, you are out)
  • They rank applicants by the CSU Index - which includes a modified GPA (college prep courses in grades 10-11 and no +/-)and only your math and reading SAT. They start admitting with the highest score and stop when the seats are full. Some campuses vary the threshold by major, others dont. - Read about it here: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
SDSU is looking for a 4100 SAT index while Channel Islands will take you with a 3200.
• At most campuses, some preference is given to local applicants.
• Most campuses hold out of state applicants to a higher standard.

Don’t kill yourself with APs senior year. Taking a few to get the college credit is a great idea but, it most important that you pass (C or better) all the required courses.

Good luck.

@Ibad96 I’m looking into Riverside since it should be in the vicinity of where I’m moving to.
@sd9754 If so I think my calculated grade should be higher than what I posted. My GPA should be a 3.6 based on Sophomore and Junior year.
@NCalRent I checked the a-g requirements, but I haven’t taken any College Prep class. And I’ll be coming over during Senior year but the other guy said that they only take in Sophomore-Junior credits, am I disqualified?
I’m planning to take the SAT again until I get a 1700-1800. If I am the one of the first to apply, will they look at my application immediately w/o a really low/high score? How will not living in the vicinity of a CSU affect my chances of entering by? Will I be considered an out of state applier if I move to California before Senior Year starts?

Oh, well I’m not worried so much about APs.
Planning to take AP English Literature
AP Environmental or Chemistry
AP Latin/3rd Year Spanish AP
AP Euro
and AP Statistics

pretty much in topics that I am strong in.

Just a couple of notes to clear up some tiny mistakes on early posts:

-USC is not a “UC,” it is a private university not associated with the University of California system (many people just starting the college search process make that mistake - I’m just clearing it up  )

-The CSU system as a whole cares not a bit about ECs. There isn’t even a place to list them on the application. Here are the application instructions http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/freshmaninstructions.pdf</a> - not even a mention of ECs in 18 pages of instructions :slight_smile: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly-SLO) is the only CSU that I am aware of that considers ECs. You can check the specific criteria for each campus here: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

Bump.

Hi, im waiting for letters from the schools i applied to. i got a 1360 in the sat the first time I took it and the second time it went up to 1460. I did fairly good in the math section 550, english section 480. my current gpa is about 3.4ish but should go up a decent amount this year with my grades this year which are mainly A’s and some B’s. i have taken 3 AP classes including this year with my AP calc. i got a B first semester, and holding an A at this moment. UC’s applied- Merced, LA, San diego, Riverside. CALstates- pomona, san luis, and san diego state. Ive been rejected by Long Beach already. I also been accpeting to Northern State univeristy. What are my chances into these schools? thank you

I don’t really know enough about you to assess your chances but, if CSULB already turned you down, you don’t stand much of a chance at SLO, SDSU (unless you are local) or any of the UCs. CP Pomona is a little easier in some majors and not in others -so, as long as you didn’t apply as an engineer, you may still have a shot there.

I don’t know where Northern State is but, order a t-shirt 'cause it sounds like thats your new home.

Congrats on your acceptance and good luck!
