The last few weeks have been hell for me and I just want to ask you guys if I have any reason to worry.
This quarter, my classes are AP Chem, AP Java, and AP Bio. Last Quarter I got all A-s (With AP Macroecon. instead of Java).
This quarter, it is looking like I will end up with a B+ in Biology, a B to B+ in Java, and a C- to C in Chem.
I have about an A- average for my GPA, so will this term cause the U of M to possibly revoke admissions?
I may be overreacting, but I am super stressed and worried. This is for CLA by the way.
Check out page 11 and then talk to your HS counselor because he/she would be in the best position to give you clarity or reassurance. If you finish the year strong and do any necessary precollege prep work just to make sure you didn’t miss out on a key concept or two during that difficult 2nd quarter, you’ll be maximizing your chances for success come fall.
And do keep in mind that, for the most part, the U of M is pretty much trying to guard against senioritis and other maladies that can afflict the senior class once that application is submitted. (Shifting coursework to easy classes, blowing off their work, etc.). They aren’t looking for reasons to shut out students they have already taken the time to admit.
So if I were to get straight A’s in the next 8 classes I have before graduation, would that be sufficient enough evidence that I have snapped out of what gripped me in Term 2, even if I were to get one or two C’s? I’m thinking through just about every scenario right now, just very worried.
Surely straight As during the next quarter would show them that you aren’t just blowing stuff off. As I tell my kids: always shoot for perfection. Even if you fall short you’ve done your best. You probably have quite a good reason for why things kind of unravelled during that 2nd Q and this is why your counselor can help you. He/she would be able to work through those scenarios for you and if need be can contact the U to advocate for you (if it comes to that). Don’t wait till that final transcript to sort this out. See your counselor ASAP and then back to your studies.
Yes I agree with what others said - be proactive. Work really hard to pull out the best grades you can. Don’t change classes from what you put on your application unless necessary and talk to your GC.
My son applied to UMN in July, and changed (maybe?) 2 classes (he never seems to keep the classes he signed up for in Spring). He called UMN to inform them of the changes and he said that the person he spoke to just said she would note it. Then 2 days later he got this serious email telling him that he needs to explain the changes in classes and information about UMN’s right to revoke admission. They opened a case on him and had the case # on the email.
He was sort of shocked (as was I since I didn’t think the changes were that dramatic). So he wrote an email explaining each class he was taking and why, along w/ explanations of why he changed 2 of the classes and how rigorous the new ones were in comparison. Then he told about other things he was doing that were academic in nature to demonstrate that he wasn’t slacking off and also reported his S1 grades and current grades to date. They responded pretty quickly and said he was OK and his admission wasn’t affected. But I am just glad he was proactive about it while there is still time to maybe do something about the situation if it was problematic. They definitely take it seriously.
After I sent my senior year transcript they e-mailed me saying that they got my transcript and that they will only follow up with students who didn’t graduate, so I’m pretty sure you’re fine.
