Chances of transfering to NYU

I’m currently in Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College and thinking of trying to transfer to NYU, however, I’m not really sure what my chances are.

In high school I had a good amount of extracurriculars, my GPA was a 4.3, my SAT was 2100. Penn State’s honors college is known for being fairly selective so being in it is sort of testament to me having good high school stats.

Unfortunately when I got here I had a lot of trouble adjusting to college life and ended up with about a 3.25 the first semester. This second semester I’ll likely end up with a 3.7 or so. I also didn’t join many clubs or anything here because I was worried I wouldn’t have time. I’m only in the guitar club.

I’m going to be applying to get in next spring, so in the fall I’ll be able to join some more clubs to help with that part of my application. I’m sure my GPA will continue to rise as well.

I guess I’m just wondering if I have a chance, and how much they weigh high school vs. college stats.

As a current NYU student I can tell you that you have a decent chance, provided you manage to pull up your GPA at least above 3.5. You must try to be more involved at your school so joining clubs is a good thing. Try to explain why your GPA was so low in the first semester, and maybe even attribute the same causes to why you’d like to leave your current institution/join NYU.

By the time you will apply your college stats will matter more than your high school stats. Get a few really good recommendations and stellar grades in the things you want to study at NYU.
