College apps are coming really close to reaching their deadline and I'm starting to get really nervous. I really want to get into UCSB, but I really think my chances are getting slim. I just got my ACT and SAT scores back;

I think one of my essay is pretty unique and explains why I have weak EC's until this year.

But I'm in a couple of clubs (President of one and VP of another), Co-commissioner of elections committee in my ASB leadership program, and I was in journalism (the school newspaper)

ALSO what other UC's should I be applying to with my GPA/Test Scores

An important thing to consider is if you are in-state or not. If you are in-state, I think you have a decent chance at UCSB, UCSC, and UCI. If you are not in-state, you still have a decent chance at those schools but probably not as strong.

Your test scores are below average for UCSB. You should look at UCSC/UCR as Matches since your GPA looks competitive. UCI/UCD along with UCSB are Low Reach/High Match depending upon your essays and EC’s.
You should consider SDSU/CPP/CSULB since these Cal States can be as competitive as the lower tier UC’s, less expensive and great academics.

You have a competitive GPA but SAT is low. Average for UCSB was 1923 for last year. If you are applying for a competitive major such as Bio/Psych/Engineering etc… you need to be above the average for a good chance. There is no reason not to apply, just be realistic on your chances and have some backups.

Yeah I realized my test scores are significantly low for UCSB, but I’m hoping my essays give me a good chance, I think they are both pretty unique (one explaining the community I grew up as an online gaming world and the other explaining me overcoming an anxiety disorder/opening up as a person in this past year)

UCD is on par with UCSB and UCI. UCI likes high GPA, so they can be more forgiving on test scores. UCD could go either way. It really depends upon your major. My older son was accepted 2 years ago for Environmental Science with a UC GPA of 4.3 but ACT of 26 along with very good essays. Younger son denied with UC GPA of 3.73 and ACT of 31 (Science 35) for CS. Overall for the Mid-tier UC’s you are a Low Reach/High Match.

UCSB is also forgiving on test scores. In fact, UCSB is forgiving on everything. For UCSB, a high GPA can make up for a low SAT/ACT score, and a high SAT/ACT score can make up for a low GPA. That is why UCSB is less selective than the other mid-tier UCs, UCD and UCI, which prefer higher GPA over everything else. However, I agree that the mid-tier UCs are low reaches or high matches.
