Chances on getting in at UGA

Hi with EA decisions for the senior class of 2012 coming out soon I just wanted to hear from people who have gotten into UGA EA with less than a 4.0.

I go to a competitive catholic high school my GPA here is a 3.3 (a 93-100 is an A)
at a public school it would probably be a 3.6 or 3.7
I am in 1 AP class this year and 1 Honors but all the classes at my school would be considered honors at a public school.
My highest score on the ACT was a 24 with an 8/12 on the writing
I have had 3 jobs, co-captain of the dance team for 2 years, a member of various clubs, and have over 200+ hours of community service.
UGA is my number one school and more than half of my family has gone there. And if accepted I will be rushing a sorority in the fall. Oh and I am an Out of State student.

Thanks for the feed back!

Please also say if you think ill be differed

Georgia’s most important criteria for acceptance is GPA and a 3.3 is not that great. They would probably disagree with your assessment that your classes are harder than those of public schools. I know private school kids like to think that but it’s just not true. Also, your ACT is subpar. Retake it if you have time and get to work on raising that GPA.

Thanks for your feedback. But I would have disagree your reply about me saying my classes are harder than a public school. I went to public school my freshman year and it was MY choice to switch to a private school because I wasn’t being challenged. And I have added up my GPA on a public school scale and depending on my grades it is a 3.5-3.7. I would like more feedback on if you think i will get in EA or deferred. I don’t need a criticism of my school, GPA, and test scores.

Unfortunately, I don’t think UGA has any algorithm that makes a conversion of your private school GPA to “adding up my GPA on a public school scale.”

Sorry but I don’t see you making the cut. I wasn’t trying to be critical of your school or grades. You asked for honest feedback and I gave it to you. You shouldn’t have asked the question if you didn’t want to hear an honest answer.

Admissions counselors have told me that my GPA that my school sends will be different then what they will consider it to be because their grading scale is different. When they look at my transcript they will calculate my GPA based on their grading scale. Thanks everyone on the feedback. I would like to hear from people that made it in EA with about my grades or got differed and then made it?

My GPA first semester of this year is a 3.4 so at a public school about a 3.7-3.8 I know my ACT score sucks but the national average is a 21. and the average at my private school is a 23

ACT Middle 50% of Admitted First-Year Students: 27 -31
Overall ACT Average for Admitted First-Year Students: 28

Your ACT is low for EA. I think you may be deferred, sorry if that is not the answer you would like to hear. Try retaking it or try the SAT. Some students test better on one over the other. Good luck!

State schools like UGA dont care about anything but GPA, test scores, and class rank. They may take other stuff into account during RD, but for EA they basically take the 7000 best GPA/SAT combos, with preference for in staters.

You said that your school has a different scoring scale. UGA will convert it to the more common scale (A= 100-90, B= 89-80, C= 79-70, etc). As far as the ACT a 24 wont cut it for EA. Maybe an instate full blood descendant from the Cherokee Nation or Zell Miller’s grand kids, but not anyone else.

@ FutureVP:

UGA doesn’t consider state of residency for admission purposes. In-state folks don’t have any advantage over OOS.

I am almost positive you will not get in early action and have a low chance for reular. I do not think you will here from anyone with your stats that got in EA because there probably isn’t anyone. A 3.3 is much lowere than last year’s median, your ACT is low, and if I understood you correctly your rigor will only include 1 AP, which is much lower than average. I would apply to other schools if I were you. Good luck and you will find your place!

Not good. Like everyone else said, raise the ACT score or take the SAT.

Thanks for the feed back. I should probably add that at my school you have to apply for AP classes and it is very hard to get in them because of limited spots so 1 at my school is good. I dont know if this matters but I have over 9 family members that have gone and graduated from UGA. Keep posting! Thanks!

I’m sorry but a 3.3 is not that great. And a 24 act? and your school’s average is 23? What kind of private school do you go to?! That’s kind of really bad. Take it again and again until you get around a 30. And if you only had like a 3.8 at your public school freshmen year, how could the classes not be challenging enoughing? Maybe if you had over a 4.0 then that would be understandable.

I have personally talked with an admissions counselor from UGA and despite the fact that you have to list any family members that attended the university on the application, they will not take that into consideration. So regardless of whether you had zero or twenty relatives attend UGA it will not help you get in.

I don’t know where you’re getting your conversion scale for calculating what your GPA at a public school would be, but you’re wrong. Colleges do not think that because your parents pay for your education, regardless of how highly esteemed your Catholic school is, that you are any smarter than the applicant coming from a local public school. Admissions looks at your grades, your classes, and your rank in the context of your school only. So they will only be judging you based on what the other applicants at your school look like. And I find it funny that you think your grades would be better at a public school if your “competitive” school’s average ACT is a a 23. Keep in mind the ACT is out of 36. That is extremely low. If anything your grades would be lower at a public school. The average ACT score at my public school of 1700 students where the majority of students learned English as their second language is a 27, so I don’t know why you think you’re smarter than people who took advantage of free education. I doubt your school has the IB program, so once again I am laughing as to why you think you are better than public school students. Case in point when you ask yourself what the IB program is.

Considering your stats, it probably would have been a wiser choice for you to apply Regular Decision. Early Action will only consider your numbers, which are extremely low for UGA in-state applicants, and therefore even lower for UGA out-of-state applicants. Regular Decision gives applicants a chance to show off their other side in terms of extracurriculars, which seem to be your forte. You also would write an essay. To be honest, I don’t think you will get in Early Action. I know for a fact that you won’t get “differed” because differ is a verb which means to be different. Oh, and I don’t think you will be deferred, either, if that’s what you were trying to ask. You don’t have a chance.

I’m being not mean, I’m just being honest. You asked for feedback and I gave it to you.

Also please stop thinking that you are smarter than public school kids because they are really going to screw you over later in life.

OK first of all that was a really mean post. Second I used to go to a public school I have only been at a Catholic school for three years and I’m sorry but Catholic schools are harder. That is a fact. So good luck everyone. and Sorry I spell “deferred” as “differed” I made a typo. I am only human I’m allowed to make mistakes. and if your school has kids that learned English as their second language then of course they are going to get in because they are a minority. I asked for feedback and you were extremely rude. I never said I was better than anyone. I was only trying to explain the rigor of my school.

EA decisions come out late today. Let us know your results.

That overall ACT score of 23 at your school definitely highlights its rigor. Private schools everywhere should be proud.

“and if your school has kids that learned English as their second language then of course they are going to get in because they are a minority.”

No, they are going to get in because they have real 3.7 GPAs and not imaginary ones, and they didn’t vomit all over the ACT like you did. BTW I’m one of those minorities but I’ll get in because I have a 32 ACT, 3.8 GPA (yes,a real one), top 10% ranking, and a rigorous schedule.

“Catholic schools are harder. That is a fact.” LOL.
