chances (OOS)

3.5 uw gpa, at one of the top college prep schools in PA
course load includes: AP US, AP Chem, AP Statistics, AP Calculus, AP Economics
1320 sat (retaking hopefully getting that up to 1400-1450)
SATIIs- expecting a 750+ in US and Math I, 700+ in Literature
really really good recommendations
good essay

ECs- varsity basketball (9,10,11,12), senior captain
-aau basketball (10,11,12), travels east coast to top tournaments
-school chorale (9,10,11,12), member of madrigals in 12th (tours the
world performing)
-member of church choir (about 100 hours of community service there)
-worker/organizer of church bazaar (40 hours of community service)
-orientation community (12), helps new students assimilate to the school
-peer mentor (11), similar to orientation

Class rank? From general knowledge, 3.5 uw's don't usually put you in the top5% or even 10% of your class. That, combined with a current SAT that's more comparable to the in state score doesn't make it look so good for the chances. Definitely will need that 1450 and a 'great' essay, not just a good one- of course that's almost all subjective but you should feel it is a great one (Essays are actually taken a good deal into account)

Yea, I'm not top 10% (but i can't be sure because my school doesn't do class rank); however, considering that my school sends about 6 kids a year to the Ivies (out of a class of 120), I am pretty sure I am not top ten.

Why aren't you getting a basketball scholarship?

You're chances as an OOS student, not in the top 5 or even 10% of your class, are pretty low. Your SAT is in line with in-state scores not OOS. Everybody has a shot, if you can up you SAT like you think and put together solid grades next fall you'd definitely help yourself.

What do you mean?

-aau basketball (10,11,12), travels east coast to top tournaments

Yea, but what does that have to do with your getting a basketball scholarship?

Basketball is easily the hardest college sport to play Division 1. In my league, I am really good, one of the best actually. I'm 6'5, and play power forward with some guard ability; however, when you leave the area and start playing in NYC and Boston tournaments the talent level SKYROCKETS. A white 6'5 kid like me is undersized for power forward and isn't as athletic as the inner city kids whose whole life is basketball. I can play Division 3 if I wanted to, but I think that's a waste of time.

Exactly. I don't know what all this scholarship talk is. If you were an ACC caliber recruit, you probably would have known it by about 10th grade...

I was also OOS and got in as Echols. Not to kill you or anything, but that GPA looks pretty bad. =S I had a 3.9 uw and 2240 SAT's, which would be.. 1480 in old SAT terms.

With those AP math courses, why the heck are you taking Math I? It's actually harder to get a good score on Math I cause it's easier (easier to make dumb mistakes, one point off = 20 points off final score, or something like that). I only took AP Calc AB and got a 760 on Math II..

Your EC's look good in my unprofessional opinion, work on those academics!

warning - it can be really tough to get in OOS. My son was 3.9, 1480, top 10% (no ranking), 4 years varsity tennis - regional awards plus captain, eagle scout, 9 APs with 5s on all exams, NMF, plus solid community service. Good creative esssays, good recs. Waitlisted! Give it a shot but find other schools you like just in case!

Yea the GPA is not good, but it is better than it seems. The bump for APs at my school is .6 where at other schools its a 1. Plus a 3.5 at my school probably puts me in the top 20% of a class of 120 (which usually sends about ten kids to the ivies every year).
I am retaking the SATs in Oct. and the Subject Tests in Nov. I thought Math I would be easier than Math II.
To toneranger- That's unlucky. He certainly seems qualified. Where did he end up going?

tussin - he went to his third choice - PSU/Schreyer for business (chose it over Lehigh, Wake Forest and Richmond). We're in state and he got multiple scholarships there - almost free! Rejected at cornell too - his second choice (UVA was his first). It's tough out there!

Tussin, what school is this? St Joes?

jpod, I don't understand your question. What high school do I go to?

yeah tussin.

ohhh i got to Wyoming Seminary Upper School in Kingston, PA.

no idea at all.
