Hi, I am a rising senior at a small private school.

GPA: 3.9 uw/4.3 w
Ranking: 5/65

SAT: CR - 620; Math - 660; Writing - 650; 1280/1930
APs: World History - 3; English Lang - 4; US History - 4
Senior classes: Calculus DE, AP English Lit, AP Chemistry, AP Govt, yearbook, Spanish 4

I have more to my resume than this but I just added the basics. I am out of state. What are my chances for getting in and for Kelley DA, honors program, Hutton honors, etc..Thank you!

You should be fine for a direct admit to Kelley and admission to IU. (2010–requires a 1270 SAT for direct admits according to the website). You should also receive a $5000 automatic scholarship if you apply early enough. There has been some debate here regarding admission requirements to Hutton. My best guess is that your SAT will be a bit low for Hutton. I do know of many students in my daughter’s class that are Kelley Direct Admits but not in Hutton. Apply to IU early is the best advice. FYI–in general they don’t look at extracurriculars.

You sound exactly like me and I was Kelley DA and in Hutton, but I applied early. So you should be fine, if you get the application in early like rrah said

You might re-take the SAT in October if you think you can get a 1310 or higher, which would get your SAT scores to IU in early November. This would get you the $9,000 automatic scholarship instead of the $5,000. My son just completed his freshman year at IU, and he applied in mid-October two years ago with a 1280 SAT, and took the SAT the same October and IU got them in November and he scored 1350 and got into Hutton and Kelley with no problems.

There are a lot of advantages for a business major also being in Hutton-- many more than being a Kelley direct admit alone. Direct admits are not allowed to take BUS K204, X202, A205, A207, X105, X205, etc., but Hutton students can take these classes. These classes have high class gpa’s and a lot of them meet only two days a week instead of three. There are also lots of COAS honors classes with easy grading that are actually easy classes content-wise that only Hutton students can get into that count toward the distribution option.

Thank you everyone for all the valuable information. I am planning on taking the SAT again in October, but I am not sure if I will be able to bring it up that high. rrah, i have heard that IU doesn’t care too much about ECs. does the same go for the essay? And yes, solidsnake, my 1280 is on a 1600 scale. and hoosierforever what do you think of your overall experience at Kelley? and bthomp1, is your son enjoying IU?

When my D applied last year I specifically asked admisssions about the optional essay. If you’re a borderline applicant than it’s a good idea to do it. I would think you’ll be fine without it.

Coming to Kelley was honestly the best thing I’ve ever done. While its challenging and the classes and overall expectations set for you will push you, you will gain a lot. I was a pretty good student in hs, but after coming to Kelley, my academics and leadership potential improved SO much. I learned that what I thought was my best wasn’t, and I could do a lot more. I also learned to be a better leader, get more involved outside of school, and more proactively chase what I wanted.

The classes are challenging for sure, but not impossible, they force you to expect more from yourself. Also, there is lots of places to get help, and the professors want you to ask for help. And the professors in Kelley are amazing, by far better than some of the general university professors. They are truly experts in their field (in one of my classes the professor was on CNBC all the time) .

I love Kelley and could carry on all day about how great it is.

My son would agree with hoosierforever on all the points he made. Kelley is very challenging, but the profs really go out of their way to help if you ask for it. The profs do a lot of research, but they seem to put the students before their research, which can be rare in many universities. The curriculum is very strong on communications (X104 and X204) and technology (K201 and X202) classes, making you take two of each when a lot of schools only require their business majors take one of each. The skills you learn in these classes will be very helpful in the business world.
