Followed an engineering class program, many AP and honor classes in math and sciences.
Captain of one team waiting on the coach from another, strong candidate as he has been told.
Will have 8 letters by the time he is done in HS.
Just attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar - Loved it and will be first choice, recruited athlete.
School & community activity - 200+ hours.

So here is the thought. If he does not get into the Academy he is hoping for the NROTC scholarship. On the NROTC it requires a applicant to apply to 5 schools. This is his No.3 choice of the 5 he would like to attend. On the scholarship he indicated he will study electrical engineering. Given the stats there are four questions.

Will he get into the school of engineering?

Is the NROTC program at this school tough to get into?

Are the odds stacked against him coming from OOS?

If all is good does he stand a chance at a scholarship from the school? (This may be a long shot.)

Most likely. He has great specifications.

Not sure.

I think chances are better if you are coming from OOS because if you think about it; they are getting more money from you.

Probably not

Yes, he’ll probably get in for engineering. NROTC scholarships are, as the recruiter told me, the hardest ones to get across all 3 branches, so if you’re talking about getting a scholarship at the NROTC program, yes its hard, otherwise I think its relatively simple to be part of the ROTC without being on scholarship. PSU does not give geographic preference to students applying. And PSU doesn’t give great aid anyway, especially for an OOS student, so doubtful for any big scholarship.

He has his NROTC scholarship interview tomorrow and is considered a very strong candidate. His application is in and ready for the first review board which meets in Aug. he just needs to get through the interview.

If he gets the scholarship all he would need to do is get into the colleges he picked.

Honors program…wow, that is a shocker! I think he would love that offer if it came his way. Does he look for that on the regular application?

Looking really good. My DS just went through his interviews for the NROTC scholarship as well as the Academy both went very well.

At this point my DS said that his Academy and NROTC applications are complete and submitted. The NROTC is 100% and is ready for the first review board in August. My DS is all over this; he watched my 1st DS go through it. The Academy app is also 100% for what he can do, he just needs the guidance portion complete which will be done today at the HS. The only thing he now needs to do is get a Nom from our US Senators or Congresman. These apps are also complete he is just waiting on an interview date.

In regard to Penn St. NROTC Unit he was talking to a kid that is currently in the unit at Penn. He said it was popular but given my DS stats if he makes one of the first few review boards he has a very good chance.

XtremePower… Thank you, dead on! We looked at what the merit-aid and given our DS ACT and other assets he is competative for some scholarships. To add the school of engineering also has “many” scholarships to offer. Very helpful!

In the end he just hopes to reach his long term goal of becoming a commissioned officer, all of the schools he is applying to are very good schools.

Once the madness of the Academy and NROTC apps and interviews are complete he will only need to fill out the college apps in Sept and file for other local offered scholarships. This will be easy compared to what he has to go through now.
