Chance...2018

Been here but now trying to help firm thoughts up from my DS.

Final ACT and he is not taking it again...too much going on.

Comp: 29
Math: 32
English: 31
Reading: 29
Science: 28
Writing: 26 - Crash & burn but he said he is just fine with the number.

Class rank: top 20%
GPA unweighted: 3.85
NHS
Followed an engineering class program, many AP and honor classes in math and sciences.
Captain of one team waiting on the coach from another, strong candidate as he has been told.
Will have 8 letters by the time he is done in HS.
Just attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar - Loved it and will be first choice, recruited athlete.
School & community activity - 200+ hours.

So here is the thought. If he does not get into the Academy he is hoping for the NROTC scholarship. On the NROTC it requires a applicant to apply to 5 schools. This is his No.2 choice of the 5 he would like to attend. Wish it was his No.1 choice but it is not up to me. On the scholarship he indicated he will study electrical engineering. Given the stats there are four questions.

Will he get into the school of engineering?

Is the NROTC program at this school tough to get into?

Are the odds stacked against him coming from OOS?

If all is good does he stand a chance at a scholarship from the school? (This may be a long shot)

I’m class of 2017, not in school of engineering though.

More likely than not, he will get in. ACT scores are good. Extracurriculars sound good. Engineering is tougher than other colleges at NCSU but I’d say he still has pretty good odds of admission.

Sorry, not familiar with that.

No. State of NC mandates that no more than 15% of students can come from OOS, however NCSU is only at 10% OOS. That means there is plenty of room for more OOS students and they are not restricting admission to them. I’m actually OOS, from VA.

Probably not a full academic scholarship, but I could be wrong. However he may get some scholarship money. As far as financial aid goes, NCSU was better than other schools I applied to in providing need-based and merit-based grants.

Good luck to you and your son! :)
