Let me know what you think…Thanks for everything!!

dear hopeful,

my friend who is on futures national team says that there is no "varsity" on futures national..... hummmm....good luck with that!

Hi Hopeful,
I was at the Harvard MUN in 2002...they don't hand out best speaker awards...what committee were you best delegate in? maybe we were in the same one...

stats are way below hahvahhd average. but still, you might pull it off with all the ec accomplishments! Wow.. my eyes popped out at how long your list is :)

I feel the same way because your SAT scores and GPA are abysmal and well below average. The problem here is its not like you took really hard classes either; since, I only see several AP's in the mix. However, your EC list is quite impressive to say the least. Still, with all the other applicants I'm seeing that have perfect or near perfect SAT/ACT scores, impeccable GPA's, and AP-filled courseloads, I would have to say your chances of being accepted are virtually nil. However, you should be able to get into any other college besides Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT quite comfortably.

Back up there, manoffire.

You have no right to tell her that her scores are "abysmal". They're not. Even if they're below Harvard's average, that's not saying much. She doesn't need such harsh discouragement from a sophomore who has no clue what his SAT scores will be and thinks that taking a few AP courses will make him stand out.

Hopeful-

It'll be tough, but it's definitely worth a shot. Make sure your essay is killer, and hope for the best.

HOPEFUL-
Harvard rejects so many people even though those people could do well academically (1400+ range sat)- Harvard looks beyond SAT scores to ECs, 1370 will not make you a reject, especially since your ECs are absolutely phenominal- you have an okay chance overall, just make sure highlight any positive aspects to your Academics in your essay to make up for the lower SAT II Scores.

hey hopeful,
I love your stats!! you seem to be a future politician, someone who will add to harvards already excellent legacy. I hope you do get in to prove to these CCers that its not ALL about grades.

if i was a harvard adcom i wud snatch you up in a second even if u had a 1100 and a 2.2

It will be still hard to get in...although that applies to everyone...sat scores are still important cauz so many applicants have both good test scores and good ec records...work on improving your test scores or GPA...make a few of your ec's really stand out on your application instead of making a long list on your application....you still have a chance but i say it's low...oh! work on your essays~!!! hope you get in~! good luck~!!!

Your ECs are good, but SATs are below par. Your low scores and class rank say that you might not be able to balance strong academics and strong involvement in ECs... Like, an adcom may say "These ECs are awesome, but she isn't leaving any time for studying!" So be careful there...other than that, your chance is as good as any, I guess.

guys, the SAT does matter, or why else would they make you take it?
its not like its just there for fun
ppl with 1200s just dont get in to harvard, period
they have so many good candidates to choose from, many of whom have excellent sats and ecs much better than hopefuls
so, if you have time hopeful, id say retake the sat because those scores will def hold you back

Since you can only retake one...I would recommend the sat II's...your sat I puts you in the 25th percentile at harvard, while your sat II's are far below that...check my facts guys but I think I am in the ball park.

Wow the list of EC's is absolutely incredible. However, Harvard only looks at EC's only after they have determined that you are academically qualified. I would suggest that you retake the SAT's, and try to get an 800 on the Math section. I've learned that colleges look at the two sections separately, and may condone a low Verbal Score with a perfect Math score (I suggest this because it looks like Math is your forte).

With your ECs, I think you have a good chance. However, are you going to write everything on that list? For example, I know that being nominated for National Student Leadership Conference is really not as prestigious as NSLC makes it out to be. I got nominated for that, too, just based on my PSAT scores. For the most part, it is just a money-making venture, not actually an honor.

Wvernrider 123, you said they may condone a low verbal score witha perfect math score. Do you think this is true the other way around, too?

suburbian,

i actually heard that adcoms value the verbal more than the math. so hopefully it does work the other way!

I don't think the adcoms will condone a low verbal with a perfect math -- especially not at Harvard. The thing is, sorry kid, there are way too many Asians/internationals getting perfect on math ... the actual stats are like 5000 peeps get 800 math score every year, compared to 1700 peeps that get 800 verbal. (If i remember correctly, those who grab both ... 800 people/year) So, I think allureNY86 is correct in saying that they value verbal more. In my opinion-- a lot more than you think.. because so many humanities people with perfect 800 verbal are sucked into prestigious LACs with good HUM concentrations. Meaning -- fewer than 1700 people with 800 Verbal will apply to Harvard.. adcoms will value this..

Oops sowee.. too much ranting. excusez-moi :)

stefo u are soo wrong..a girl from my school had a score that was in the 1100s and she got into harvard and columbia. She also won the chase smart start scholarship but she ended up going to harvard so she didnt accept it..soo SATs are really important but its not the only thing they look at..GL Hopeful..i hope u get in..ur ECs rock..ooo yeah..

1100?!?!?! wow . . . . .
