Chances please!

Hey! I am an Indian international applying to OWU (RD). I am in need of FA.

Here are my stats:-
SAT:- 1780 (Math-570,CR-560,Writing-650,Essay-10/12)
I know its a really low score compared to the ones I have seen on this site who are applying to such colleges.

CLASS RANK:- Top 10%

APP ESSAY:- I think its stellar. Verified it with so many profs , teachers and my cousins in MIT and Columbia!

My EC's are also very very good. Above average I would say. Won a lot of prizes in major Model U.N Conferences in the region , Debating , Drama and Quizzing.

My Secondary School report is also excellent with straight A's excpet Hindi (which is a B!)

So please could anyone chance me??

Thanks and sorry for the bother! I know chance threads can be irritating!

bump..anyone??

It is hard to say. Your scores are below the average for all students at OWU. This means they are way below average for international students since the competition for international kids is ever more difficult. And obscenely difficult if you seek a lot of aid. Since your standardized scores are below average and your school records are probably not anything to brag about in the context of all the other international students applying, I'd do anything possible to emphasize other parts of your application that are really important to OWU: Character, Interview, Essays. Have something in your application that speaks for your character. In particular as it relates to helping others. If you are in India, ask if you can get an alumni admission interview. There are tons of Indians at OWU, so OWU might be able to arrange something. Furthermore, this will show that you really are interested. Essay: make sure that you emphasize not only "why OWU" but "why OWU should have you".

But in the Common App site I saw the Intl requirements page and the min SAT 1 scores in the verbal and Math section stated are 550 and 550 respectively???.

My scores in the CR and Math section are 560 and 570 respectively

Also the SAT Verbal & Math 25th percentile is 540 respectively.

And my scores are higher then this..Is the info on Common App wrong?

Thanks!

You are talking about the min(=minimum) in your first sentence. The 25th percentile is the bottom quartile of the class, so your scores are barely above that.

From what I remember looking at the stats on the common application, these are the scores for U.S. students only. So, basically, you will be competing with with scores below the mean for U.S. students but your pool is international students whose average SATs is 200 points more than for US students. So, you are already at a severe disadvantage if standardized scores are the only factor.

Having said that, standardized scored are not the only factor. You have a good application, so make sure you emphasize other aspects of your application. It will be tough to get in, even tougher to get in with aid (as an international). But that's the case in a lot of schools, so you lose nothing but your time if you apply.

This is a chances and belongs on the chances topic post on the CC site. No one is going to be able to give any solid answer, just conjecture.

hey there!

I got in OWU as an international student last year.

I had a 1700 SAT, and a 2.8 High school GPA,

I had TONS of extra curriculars and I even had a gap year before applying.

I didnt apply for financial aid and they gave me some scholarship or something for leadership which was $10 000 a year! which isnt too shabby considering I didnt even apply for aid and my stats were CRAP!

I think you are IN my friend as long as your essays are well written and intelligent but from the heart. as far as financial aid, im sure you will get more than the 10 000 I did... at least i hope so for your sake.

I find it hard to believe with these stats...unless you really had something else going on for your application that you are not telling us.

uhh... hard to believe?...

well I did the IB and only scored 26 points on it. so I converted that to a 2.8. (I dont really know if it is)... I took the hardest course load tho...

ummm.... other than that... I guess im a really good lookin guy... but I mean.. they dint get a picture of me so mayb they just guessed as much and thus accepted me? what do you reckon? :D

What do I reckon? Take a look at http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=2009&profileId=10

With 2.8 high school GPA, you will fall approximately in the bottom 15% of the matriculating students' distribution. Being a student at Ohio Wesleyan, I know several people with such HS GPAs and observationally I've noticed that they tend to fall in either the athlete or minority categories. Basically a category that the school either has a strong reason to recruit from (lacrosse, soccer for athletics) or minorities (for diversity reasons). Occasionally also students who make up for their abysmal HS GPAs by having outstanding SAT scores or essays with life-changing essays that speak for outstanding character.

Now, all of that is with the caveat that it applies only for US applicants. Everywhere, but especially at OWU (because of merit aid scholarships) the competition for admission and scholarships for international students is even more intense.

So, you can see what I reckon.

well then you reckon correct my friend.

because I had substantial reasons for my low GPA and I was a minority group as well as having had a gap year in which I was in the middle of the hezbullah - Israel war and that turned out to be quite an essay.

not to mention that I worked at a temple and it was a life changing experience. So you are right I was one of the lucky minorities. Foolishly I turned down the admission with the 10 000 dollar scholarship. I've applied to transfer this year from a university in europe, my GPA is now a 3.9 with seriously tough courses. Lets hope I get accepted as a transfer student. What do you reckon?
