Im planning applying RD because i probably wouldnt have a chance getting in EA

I know Boston College is going to be a big reach for me but do I a chance???

You have a decent chance. 50/50, I say.

thank you. so you would recommend applying RD instead of EA right?

Dear torty08 : Before we start reviewing your profile, please take a detailed look at the College Board data that is available regarding standardized test scores at Boston College at the following link.

[College Search - Boston College - BC - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Now, if it not obvious why this data point is important to you, your SAT scores are at best in the bottom quartile of accepted students if you are hoping for a 1900 three-way score. Your composite ACT at 27 is based on my experience at or below the fifth percentile and the sectional score on English of 23 will virtually guarantee your disqualification from consideration. While we do not have your SAT scores broken down by section, your ACT scores should not be submitted in their current state as you will be an immediate rejection. Boston College is a Top 40 school in the nation and hearing about your test taking skills is not what a school that is highly selective is looking to hear.

Your GPA at 3.65/10th percentile is the edge of the sweet spot on acceptances - if you can show any kind of trend data suggesting that your AP work is superior to work in your early high school career, you can offset that lower percentile ranking.

As an AP scholar, doesn’t this imply that you have exam scores in the 4+ range? Doesn’t this run counter to your “test taker” view?

Your profile asked whether you have a chance - with your ACT scores, absolutely not. Without more SAT data, it is hard to say. My biggest concern about your application is not your activities, sports, volunteerism, school spirit, or course work listed. The problem is whether you will be able to write a compelling essay that can accentuate your passion for Boston College (or any other chosen school). Your essay might well be a blind spot in your application process and working on that element now is your best course of action.

Also, you have to give some serious thought as to what colleges fit your profile as it currently stands. Perhaps if you offered some “expected” schools, our community can offer some additional thoughts.

In closing, this review might seem “depressing”; hopefully you will not take it as such, but rather accept this note as a call to action on several fronts (SAT testing, essay) and forcing you to look at the “man in the mirror” to decide where you comfortably fit academically based on the profile offered.

Good luck and the very best wishes during the stressful application period. If we can help with other ideas, please post here to let us know.

Everyone has a chance, but in your case, the chance is extremely low. And yes, RD is the only way to apply to BC, assuming you pull down nearly all A’s this semester. Otherwise, your stats are very low for BC and similar ranked schools.

~90% of BC’s students are in the top 10% of their HS class and as scott notes, you are borderline in-out.

The 25th % for SAT score is 1920/30 and your score is significantly below that – even “hoping” for a 1900 will not improve your chances, which would require a 2000+, i.e., above BC’s mean. AP Scholar means 3’s on AP scores which is of no help. (btw: 3’s on the AP tests corresponds well to 600’s on the corresponding subject test.)

If you truly are a poor test-taker, consider test optional schools such as Wake Forest.
