Chances @ School of Engineering (OOS)

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their opinion on my son's chances of getting into the University of Texas, Austin (School of Engineering).

He is a rising senior planning to apply as an out-of-state student. He attends a fairly large public high school. Here are his stats:

WGPA: 3.95
ACT: 31 (score of 8 on essay portion)
Class Rank: 30 of 378 (Top 8%)

Varisty ice hockey 9-12 (Captain, 12)
Varsity wrestling 9,10

AP Classes: Chemistry 11, Calculus 11, English 12, Physics 12, Stats 12
numerous honors classes

National Honor Society: 10,11, 12
Boys State
Habitat for Humanity (organized efforts for his team)
Volunteer camp counselor 9-12
Volunteer youth hockey coach

Thanks!

I would say decent chance. Just make sure he finishes strong so he can maybe improve in rank a little. Maybe take another ACT

I’d say his chances are pretty good considering his rank. A point or two extra on the ACT would really help. Any SAT numbers?

Thanks for your replies! He hasn’t taken the SAT. Only the ACT. Does he need to take the SAT?

No, he can send the ACT only, but he will need to take an SAT2 in either math 1 or 2 to show “readiness”. It’s all on the website.

My son only took an ACT also, 1 and done!! At the admissions meeting we went to, it was confirmed that this is fine. They do not look at subsections, they look at the composite and convert it to SAT, so a 31 will be an equivalent SAT score of 1380 (math and english) and then adding the writing (say your son got a 31 combined english and writing on ACT) - a 2070 out of 2400. They told me they use this table:

I think your son has a great shot at engineering! He and my son might be classmates next year :)

I am going with him on Monday to Austin to an Engineering Admissions sessions and then a subsection meeting for kids interested in electrical/computer engineering. I will report back to you any further information I get from that.

Good luck to your son!!

Oh, one more thing! They said that if a kid is borderline, they look at the subscores that will help them get in to their specific major (if you send more than one test), in engineering’s case, they will look to see how strong your math score is relative to others trying to get into your major.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks, ag 54! Bast of luck to your son as well. We visited UT in March and my son loved the campus. There wasn’t an engineering presentation during our trip (I think we had just missed one).
