Chances... sorry

Hey there, I applied to Macalester and I'm considering it one of my reaches. I was wondering if anyone else has any input... Think I'll get in? Think your dog has a better chance? Either way, I'm interested in what you think.

GPA: 93
ACT: 30
Rank: top 29% (eh...)

APs, IBs, Honors classes:
AP Psychology
IB English HL 1 & 2 (2 year course)
IB Spanish SL 1 & 2 (2 year course)
IB Economics SL
Anatomy & Physiology (college course)
AP European History
Honors English
IB Chemistry

ECs (very weak):
Senior Class Play (9hrs/week for 10 weeks)
Club Soccer (9,10,11) - captain
Summer Basketball (9,10,11)
Club Lacrosse (9)
J.V. Soccer (9)
J.V. Basketball (10)
Church Volunteer (~200 hrs)
S.A.D.D. (12)
Spanish Club (11,12)
Photography (I develop my own pictures... I don't think this really counts though)
National Honor Society

Tore ACL at end of 11th grade. This led to not being able to play sports competatively this year.

So... questions? comments? All is welcome. Thank you very much.

please tell how much is 30 ACT equal to .......... u got fair chances anyway...

according to the College Board, a 30 ACT is equal to approximately a 1320-1350 SAT.

u have good chances i guess

where else r u applying to ??

Your rank definitely won't help you, but i'm sure you're aware of that. If you're essays are good you probably have a decent shot.

Yeah, I know the rank certaintly isn't going to help

I also applied to:
Boston University
Northeastern University
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Geneseo
Santa Clara University
Oberlin College
Fordham University
Pitzer College
Bard College
New York University (Gallatin: No chance, but I figured I would try anyway)

how is IB spanish a SL course?
I thought all 2 year IB were HL?
are you only taking the SL exam?

If your rank is only top 30 that will really hurt.
My average GPA is a 3.55 unweighted (approx 90), but I am in the top 20% (actually 1 spot lower and I wouldn't) SAT 1370. Soccer coach said I have "a good chance" to get in

If you can contribute to the campus in an obvious way I would assume you have a much better chance to get in.

I believe that the average ACT to Mac is a 29-30, but the average SAT is around the ACT equivalent of a 31

My school calls the course Spanish IB/SL 2 but technically it's AP Spanish. But, for reasons that make no sense, they call it a second year of IB/SL on transcripts and such. So, I'm taking the SL test as well as the AP test.

Also, the ranking is a bit strange. There are kids with 90 averages who didn't even make it into the top 50%. Also, I fell below a bunch of kids who never took any IB or AP courses, ever, and got mid to high 90s in all the regular classes. Would colleges take into account the weighting and ranking system of the high school?

That's probably a stupid question but I was a bit angry about the whole rank issue when we first got them, it doesn't compare the students accurately.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the input.

well it sounds like your school does not weight class rank

my school mainly uses weighted gpa's for class rank, but they also can calculate the unweighted one for those who do not take all honors courses.

In the weighted system you get assigned an extra grade point (in the 0-100 system it would be 10 points) if you get a C or higher in a honors/AP/IB course

when you applied to mac I THINK there was a small section to add stuff into.
you should have mentioned something about the rank issue there or in your essays. I hope you did for your sake, or at least hope that the school did when they send the transcripts
