Since I have joined this site, I think the chances threads are amusing. Everytime I see a thread that says "Chance Me" and "I Will Chance You Back", I cannot help but think of bookies in some dark, smoke-filled room, running numbers and odds and collecting on bets. The funniest part is that these conversations are between people who seem to lack confidence in their expertise to chance themselves, but have all sorts of knowledge and confidence to chance others. Very amusing. I know there are many knowledgable folks here who could honestly chance someone, but the constant "chance me" threads are tedious.

It’s also funny how people with great ECs and high grades are worried about not getting into good schools.

Who are those who can honestly chance people, if most chancees aren’t that great as chancers?

I got sucked into this myself in a weak moment. Of course, nobody answered, BECAUSE NOBODY KNOWS! Kids can’t tell other kids whether they’re going to be accepted, and the adults, unless they’re admission reps for YOUR college, can’t tell you if you’re a good candidate. My favorites, though, are the kids who are the “experts.” They’ll tell a kid they really have no shot at a particular school (usually an Ivy) - and I suspect usually is an Ivy they’re applying to themselves and they don’t want the competition. I’m sure the CC Gods created the “chances” threads to try to get the kids out of the college forums, but that hasn’t really worked so well. Oh, well. Here I am, caught looking at the “chances” threads, trying to find a glimmer of hope…

Chance threads are like a bowl of candy on a receptionist’s desk - you know you shouldn’t but what the heck.

I’d guess the opposite. I’m thinking that, as a group, the chance threads are among the biggest traffic drivers at this site. If the goal is to show how ‘popular’ your site is, what better method?

To the OP.

I think the better analogy would be chance threads = fortune tellers. Bookies know what they’re doing.

Chances Threads= Outlet for bored nervous people
