Betting on admissions

A funny thought just came to me, reading one of the many "chances" threads around this site. People always remark how it's impossible to predict chances, etc. but what if there were real incentive to accurately guess the odds?

What if someone took the hundreds of chances threads, and later results threads, and made it into a betting game? People could take certain odds on certain students, and try to profit by the fortunes and misfortunes of stressed out high schoolers. Maybe even some corrupt admissions officers could let a few long shots slide in, reject some shoo-ins, strike it rich, and bring CC some scandal. Oh, it would be glorious. It would bring all the excitement of the admission process from the seniors to the laymen.

Imagine how much fun decision threads would be if every somber "rejection" entry were followed with the jubilation of the shrewd guessers who just made $30 off the poor lad's small envelope.

And I bet everyone would give much more accurate predictions if they're putting cash behind them, so the real winners are all the applicants, so desperate to know a hard, numerical probability. And of course the corrupt insiders.

Or maybe there wouldn't even need to be money, just a tally of points, with the best guesser to be awarded the "College Confidential Cup" each April. It even alliterates!

Making this thread seems like such a better idea now than it will when I wake up tomorrow.

I PUT TEN Gs DOWN THAT I GET INTO QUEENSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!!!!

That's funny. I laughed.

Well, I tried too, but it didn't work.

HAHA That is so cruel...

Man, that is twisted.

I'd play =</p>

that be kind of hard...b/c how do you know they are telling the truth?

There were bets on a lot of people at my school. It was fun- added even more interest to the admissions pool. Of course, we only did it when we had their permission, and normally the kids in question were involved in the betting.

This sounds like a Freakonomics study. An excercise like this could actually reveal some interesting undiscovered or counterintuitive ideas about the appliction process. the CC website might support or help facilitate your project..maybe if you didn't bet with real money...I rember my grandmother did a study back in the 20's on how highschool girls chose a college or vocational program and she discovered the most common factor was advice from their mothers. go figure....

Nice idea. I'd play (for money though).
While we're at it, I got another idea. Why don't we put our unused admission spots for auction on ebay? Only waitlisted applicants are allowed to bid!

thisSHHHisBANANAs, you scared me. That's my local community college. How coincedental that we live in the same area.

I remember placing bets with my friends on a few people. They were small things, like 10 or 20 dollars.
