Chances to Transfer into Carlson?

I'm trying to enter as a junior.

I'm transferring within the U of M - Twin Cities.

Here's my stats:

3.73 GPA

A in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, B+ in Calculus 1 (although A- in Calculus 2)

Work experience at an insurance company and as a website developer

Lots of college / high school involvement, including marketing club, advertising club, Spanish club, band, mock trial, and more

Lots of volunteer and community service experiences, including being a math teacher for at-risk adults seeking to pass the GED test, habitat for humanity, a local theatre, the animal human society, feed my starving children, and more

3 letters of recommendation from college professors. 2 from Carlson professors, one from a history professor. One of the Carlson professors wrote in the letter that she believes I am a person who would thrive in Carlson and that she strongly recommends admitting me into Carlson. The other Carlson professor, my statistics professor, offered me a full-time job at his company.

I'm worried I won't get in...are my chances pretty good at least?

You will probably get in, as you have letters from CSOM professors. I am trying to transfer in the sophomore level, and do not have as much credentials as you. Hopefully, it all works out for us. Good luck!

That sounds like a pretty strong application to me. I think that they are in the process of growing the program and average transfer GPAs have come down a bit as a result, so your grades are competitive. If you wrote a good statement I think your chances are solid.

In any case, good luck!

kenny2012: good luck to you as well!

noimagination: Huh, I didn’t know that about the average transfer GPA.

Yeah, I think my essay is pretty solid. I wrote about teaching the at-risk students trying to pass the GED test. The main themes in my paper are: my ability to combat ambiguity with leadership and confidence, working with a diverse group of people, and thinking on my feet and breaking down complex ideas so that they can be understood by others.

To expand on the letters of recommendation, here’s some quotes:

Marketing professor from Carlson:

“After teaching CSOM students for 14 years, I believe I understand what type of student fits into the CSOM culture and does well here. (my name) exhibits the qualities that suggests he will do well. He is bright, focused, and personable. I strongly encourage the decision to admit (my name) into the Carlson School of Management.”

Stats professor from Carlson:

“Based on what I have learned, I can comfortably say that if there was only one single student accepted to your program this year, my vote would go for (my name). Over the past 18 years, I have taught several thousand undergraduate and MBA students various Business Statistics and Mathematics courses. Among all those students I would rank (my name) among the top 1% based on his curiosity and ingenuity.”

So yeah, I don’t know how much weight they put on these, but the more the better.
