Hi,

I have a 3.7 - 3.76GPA. The UCLA Representative from the Cypress/Fullerton CC District said I have barely any chance to get into UCLA with an Economics major. Would it be possible to go in with a PoliSci major and then switch to Economics or maybe choose to double major in PoliSci and Econ?

Also, with a 3.7 GPA, would i get into UCB with an Environmental Economics and Policy major? I don't think many people know about that, so the chances of getting in would be higher, right? (Unless everyone starts applying after I post this... :P)

As you can see, I am horribly stressed out about this whole thing. Your advice and/or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! :)

Thank you very much!

I’m not sure, but I do know that both economics and poli sci are very, very competitive majors at UCLA… good luck.

Thanks, I’ll need it.

The UCLA Rep said I have a definitive chance for PoliSci. And I double checked my GPA, it’s a 3.77.

Well, my current problem is that I want to get into UCLA’s Linguistics and Computer Science program (single program). No other UC has this kind of joint program that I’ve seen. My previous records at other colleges may hinder my chances, even though I have a 3.6 GPA and a good set of extracurricular activities. So I was thinking that if I get into another UC or CSU elsewhere, what would I transfer as? I realized that transferring in as a Linguistics major would be much easier than coming in as a Computer Science major and I would just double once I transfer.

Point of the story: transfer in what you think is easiest. Go in as Poli Sci if it is easier, then try to double from there.

Ahh, so we’re on similar boats. Well, that’s the issue. What if you’re stuck with Linguistics and I’m stuck with PoliSci? (Sorry if that is horribly pessimistic, but it IS our future!)

I don’t mind being stuck with Linguistics. I can always minor in Computer Science.

I am going to check for you on the UCLA switching/double thing… give me a minute.

But that’s changing majors. What about adding a major / double majoring? Or is it the same issue?

Hmm… Yeah, it sounds more difficult than I thought, or maybe not. With a 3.77, would you advise I give UCLA a try with straight-up economics? The UCLA rep said that most Econ majors have 3.9.

I’m thinking I’ll apply to UCB with a straight-up environmental economics major. <— Do you know the transfer profile for that major?

And for UCLA, I guess I’ll give it a go with PoliSci and then try to double major in Econ from there. :/

Hmm, you have a 3.7… most econ majors have 3.9, that’s seemingly the minimum. You could go a couple ways with this.

Write a DAMN good personal statement with some strong extracurriculars and try to go straight into Econ. I truly believe political science may be easier. From what everyone says that math/econ thing seems easiest too…

UCB, I am not sure, you’ll have to Google that one or check their website… it took me a long time to learn how to navigate UCLA’s website, I am not about to learn Berkeley’s tonight. Sorry, man…

RE: your question about being stuck with political science…

I had a friend who got his undergraduate degree in communications. He worked as a lobbyist for a number of years for Israel (he’s Jewish American). After some time, he came back to the US and got into UCLA’s Anderson School of Management and got his MBA. He now works for Goldman Sachs. I don’t know if that’s something you were looking to do with your economics degree, but in America, you’ll never be stuck. Some places like Sweden, if you go to a school for one certain specialization then you’re stuck doing that forever until you go to a school to learn a different trade…

Gah. Well, that’s the thing. I’m already set in stone that I want to do Econ. I don’t want to pursue a university if there’s no chance of me getting into Econ. PoliSci would just be my entry ticket. But as you said, hopefully I’m not stuck anywhere!

I really appreciate your help, by the way. If you find anymore information, I’d gladly appreciate it. Nervous as heck about applications now. =/

No problem. Can you go check out my chances thread now? LOL
