I'm going into my second year at UC Davis this coming Fall 2010.
I have a UC GPA of 3.4 and an overall GPA (from CC classes I took during summers throughout high school and this summer) of 3.50.

I got in UC Davis as a Political Science major, but second-guessed myself and was really undeclared about what I really wanted to do, so I ended up taking a couple of Chemistry classes, upon my parents urges (that really messed up my GPA.. with one C+ in a 5 unit class! argh. and then another B in the second class in the chemistry series).

SO! My question is, if I can raise up my GPA by the Fall, Winter, and maybe Spring quarter, what are my chances of getting into UCLA - possibly through a Political Science major?
Acknowledging that Political Science is already an impacted major, and that transferring intra-UC is already hard.. on the UCLA transfer admit profile it says that the average admitted intra-UC was a 3.62 for the Fall of 2010.

And, do you think my chances are higher of transferring into Berkeley since their Political Science major isn't as impacted as UCLA's?

Thoughts please! :)

an Economic major student currently attending UC Irvine in the forum had rejected from UCLA for fall 2010 admission with a GPA 3.9. I dont know how competitive your major in UCLA but i think it is somehow challenging with your GPA. beside, UC to UC transfer is really difficult. I know the class in UC Davis is relatively difficult compare to community college, but in fact, your GPA is relatively low compare to other UC to UC transfer student.

^ that’s different, he (sandaboy? if i remember correctly) was rejected because UCLA wouldn’t count one of the prerequisites he took at UCI, even though they were almost the exact same class. Plus, he was applying for Business Econ, which is even more competitive than Economics.

In my opinion, your GPA is still competitive; although optimally, you should raise it if you can. From my experience on this forum, UCLA stresses heavily on completion of major prerequisites, so whether it’s UCLA or UCB, call the admissions to check if the classes you have taken at UC Davis satisfies those prerequisites.

@girlyshout
well. I got in UCLA with a GPA 3.8 as well… and my easy is not too well, only correct by two ppl.

sigh, like i’ve said, UCLA rejected him not because of his 3.9 GPA, but on the basis of prerequisites.

your 3.5 is probably OK given that it’s lowered by chemistry which is NOT major related.
just complete your prereqs.

ALL OF THEM.
use community college if you must.

On the other hand, while you did not really light it up in Chemistry, you did demonstrate you can pass Chemistry courses at the college level which is something a lot of people are unable to do. Why don’t you stay at UCD and major in Chemistry. Employment prospects and earning potential for a Chemistry graduate are going to be much higher than a Political Science major even if they got their degree from UCLA. Employers who hire chemists know that Chemistry is really difficult and will probably hire you even with a mediocre GPA in Chemistry, as long as you get the degree is all that matters.
