Chances (Updated)

First of all, what you are about to see is way below average for here, but good for me. I'd like for you all to tell me whether my schools are reaches/matches/safeties if you can. My schools may seem all over the place, but they are not and there are a lot, but this is only a general list.

So this is a little long and I hope I put everything down. If some of you could give some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

So indeed I took the ACT in Sep. and recieved (drumroll) a 29!!!!!! So much better than my SAT, so I will be sending my ACT score. Now with my updated list of colleges, am I good or should I rethink some things?

Wow a 29 is pretty damn good bro. Helluva disparity between act and sat. Cant say mine was for the better :(

Anyway, you should certainly look at some more selective schools unless (as it seems) you really care about sports and school spirit.

Where in PA btw?

Thanks. I wasn't expecting that good of a score, knowing that my SAT's were horrible. I am sooooo happy though.

I don't know what schools I should be looking at, since I had my list set based on my SAT scores, but now with the ACT score, I could look for others.

I am near Doylestown in PA.

Anybody else?

VaTech accepts about 70% of its applicants, so you should have no trouble.

I know a kid who got into PennState when he was gone for half of his junior year at drug rehab, so again, no trouble.

You should really consider more selective schools! University of Delaware is good in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry because of Dow Jones. Harvey Mudd is a small college in California that specializes in the sciences, math, and engineering. University of Chicago has good sciences and doesn't factor SAT scores in much. Essays are much more important there.

Good luck!

(sorry, you already have Delaware. I definitely missed that!)

Are you serious???

OP has NO chance of getting into harvey mudd. 1060 SAT....

(HMC average is around 1500 or so)

(hmc doesn't accept the ACT by the way, so even if the OP got a much higher score on that, it wouldn't help for mudd)

thisisausername obviously has no idea what she's talking about, which can be seen by the 6 posts she's made.

Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that Harvey Mudd will probably not work out for you. I know it's not fair, but admission is super-selective for white males. The SAT score that you would need to be in the running would be at least a 2200. In addition, most well-qualified applicants have taken as many AP math/science courses as possible (depends on availability of courses).

It may be worth it though to still apply. If you write terrific essays and get great recommendations, they may make an exception for you. If not, you're only out $60 and some time on the application.

I dunno. Sorry to be a downer.

If you really want to get into more selective schools, then spend the next few months studying for the SAT. Elite schools will sometimes take non-URM students with 1400s or 1300s, but with a 1060 they might not even really consider your application.

Guys: I was in no way thinking about Harvey Mudd. I am no idiot and no what they are looking for. Obviously some of you did not read all of my post because I took the ACT and got a 29 and will not be sending my SAT score but rather my ACT score.

Very nice score change! PSU is essentially a safety for you now, and Indiana will likely give you 6-7K per year in scholarship $$$ (making tuition comparable to PSU).

You may also want to consider Illinois and Wisconsin, great midwest schools with great chem programs. Although both offer little in terms of financial aid. Additionally, both Texas and TAMU have good chem programs, if the state of Texas interests you at all.

tennisace, i never said you are an idiot ;-/

i think atomicfusion was more-so directing his/her comments to thisisausername

rocketDA: You're probably right. Sorry.

Who would want to go to a school called Harvey Mudd anyway? :P

But yeah, Ill., wiscy, Texas, Michigan would be good.

OP, you go to CBW?

No, I go to Pennridge.

I've thought of some other colleges, which are more selective. What do you think my chances are here (or should I not even consider):

University of Virginia
Carnegie Mellon
University of Pennsylvania
George Washington
University of Illinois
University of Texas

IMO- not even worth applying to UVA and Penn (UVA has almost ivy standards for out of staters). Carnegie Mellon is a big reach. GW and the others - maybe. UDel and PSU are good choices.

Penn - no
Texas - very hard for OOS students
CMU - possible, not probable
GW - yes
UVa - see Texas
Illinois - yes

Yeah, I realize you never said you wanted to go to HMC. My comments were directed at thisisausername, sorry for not clarifying.

Are you studying for the ACT? You should keep practicing, since state schools put a LOT of weight on your SAT/ACT score. Try to increase it by one or two points.

A2Wolves6: Are you saying that I have somewhat of a chance at the schools above when you said yes?
