Chances UT Business

Rank: Top 7%
Expected SAT: ~1900ish (I am a junior)
In-State: Texas
ECs: strong
RECS: average
Essay : expect it to be good
1/4 Hispanic (think I willl be National Hispanic Scholar)
Fluent in 3 languages other than english (hook?)

... i do not have the green card ( visa) but I am hoping to a - get it or b - I heard UT willl still look at me like a texas resident

... I know the cutoff is around 5% (correct me on this one) so I am really hoping to pull my rank up. The almost guaranteed way to do this is to drop track next semester and take AP Psych.. but IDK how bad that is gonna look in terms of EC (I just started XC this year, junior, and am on varsity but I have been running for two years and even if I drop track, I will still run)
what else should i do to maximize my chances?
what are the chances that they will give me some kind of merit scholarship?

Thanks!!

Hey I live in Dallas too what school do you go to?!

The sad and awful truth is that your ECs, classes, SAT, etc don't really matter (since your SAT is not stellar). Business admits 75% of its students by rank only, and the rest is for OOS, nonranking schools, exceptional students, etc.

If you REALLY want to get into UT-Austin and that's the only school you want to go to - what you really should do (if your school doesn't weight grades) is to take the easiest schedule you can to improve your rank. Business doesn't care what your schedule is as long as you are around top 5%. Thankfully I'm top 3.8%!

Plano East! What about you?
Are you sure that the cutoff is 5%? I think it is but I would be very happy with the exact numbers for previous years.

I've heard it ranges from 5-7%...you can always internally transfer once you get into UT itself (which you will).

And I go to Lakehill, a small private in Lakewood (east dallas).

Hmm.. the idea of an internal transfer seems like a good alternative. Do you know if it is hard? The GPA is on their website, but that doesn't tell me much because I don't know how hard it is to get such GPA..

Well, they accept about 2/3 of the internal applicants each year, but that is because of the GPA requirement, which also changes yearly.

UT looks at GPA/class rank and nothing else. You don't need to worry about taking track.

well her whole point was that track brings down her GPA. And is the cutoff really 5%? dances around in happiness

the cut off last year was about top 5.5% I believe, sucks. My friend was top 6%, haha. And yeah as for internal transfer... Basically-

You need to complete Micro Economics and Calculus I at the very least, they say though it's better to complete Micro and Macro + Calc I and Calc II.

Average GPA for transfers is usually around a 3.7 and the minimum changes, it's been 3.4 and 3.5 usually. The way they accept internal transfers is they simply look at the people who completed those course requirements and accept about the top 180, if a larger number of people apply though I believe they accept more. But that's what they do, strictly look at GPA.

wait.. are you guys talking about Business or Business HONORS? Because I think the cutoff is a lot higher for Business and around 2-3% for business HONORS. Honors is so hard to get in...sigh..

ahh.. honors. impossible. we are talking about regular business. mccombs.
wait.. do AP credit count towards GPA?

... maybe i should move to the ghetto. damn competitive school district.

I do not know where you guys are getting that top 5% can get in ut business school,Austin. (I hope it is true)
Top 3% are guranteed. Call admissions and ask what was the cut off fo r last yr for business school.
For BHP, ranks has nothing to do. each application is reviewd individually.

Amma, the cutoff last year was top 5.5% I believe, but it changes annually.

i'm 6/96 with a 3.9 and 26 ACT in-state...i hope i make the cut/.
