my description of myself:
i am very math/science orientated.... as you can see from my low verbal and economic scores.

here are the lists of the colleges im applying to.... wut are my chances???

1st choices: Caltech, MIT, Harvey Mudd
2nd choices: U of Michigan- Ann Arbor, U Texas- Austin
Safe choices: Illinois tech, Clarkson U

this guy posted the same question 6 places across the CC forum.

stop spamming us!

i thought not many ppl hang out in more than one forum dats all... no offense man im not spamming

Since you are an English learner, I think we will give you a little leeway for the verbal and writing scores. And it would be a good idea to mention the IB SL English 5 and the other IB Humanities test scores. But even so, I'm not sure how much of a chance you'll have with those scores, because plenty of internationals score higher on the verbal and writing. But you are definitely not an impossible case.

ok ok... its fine.

Harvey Mudd definitely likes to see well-rounded individuals who have strengths in both math/science and verbal/writing skills. Also, I'm not sure, but I believe that places for international students, particularly if you would require a scholarship, are rather intense. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume you're applying for the class of 2010 and don't really have time to bring your scores up, so what I would suggest is that you really emphasize your other activities (swimming/soccer and any other extracurriculars or humanities that aren't immediately apparent) and if you deliver a dynamite essay, they might just look past your low verbal score. Another thing to consider is whether or not you would actually be happy here... I know many people are unware, when the first come here, that Mudd has such a strict humanities curriculum, with a total of 12 required humanities courses over the 4 years (a little less than a third of your total credits). If you don't want a school that would demand such things of you, there are probably schools that would appeal to you more (and might not care about your low verbal scores as much). But by all means, apply and see how things go, and make your decisions AFTER you have a bunch of places offering you a spot at their school.

i knew that hmc is a liberal art college, but i thought it was very similar to caltech in that it focusses on math/physics/engineering courses instead of having an all round curriculum. i do not particularly know the US system, so how much does 12 required humanities courses look like. for example, how many hours per week if i were to spread it over the 4 years.

in class, mudd humanities is about 3 hours/week. (at least for first years)

we do focus on math/science/engineering, however, the college makes it a point that these areas have great influence and impact on society, so we should know how our work will impact society.

Mission Statement: "To educate engineers, scientists and mathematicians well versed in all these areas and in the humanities and social sciences so that they may assume leadership in their fields with a clear understanding of the impact of their work on society."

and there it is.

I read somewhere that Mudd encourages a variety of cultures from many different countries... since i am from Thailand will this fact add to my admission chance??

Also, when will I be notified about the admission decision?

You will be notified about the admission decision probably late March to early April. As for the diversity issue, yes Mudd does like a variety of cultures, but at the same time it is hard to get financial aid for international students, so it works for you and against you.

i am not applying for financial aid... i believe this will increase my chance of admission?

Then yes, I think it would help a lot.

thx alot for replys... you've been a great help :D
