Just wondering if I have any shot. Applying from a Catholic Massachusetts high school w/ a 3.05 GPA and a 1900 SAT (1230/1600). I have great ECs, including serving as a sports writer of a magazine, two weekly newspapers, and a daily newspaper. What do you all think, any chance?

Frankly, with your current GPA, not much of a chance. Sorry.

The good news is that if you go somewhere, such as a community college, and get at least a 2.5, you have a good chance to transfer into Maryland. Your best bet is to go to a community college in Maryland. By state law Maryland must take you if you have a 2.5 GPA or better in a Maryland CC.

lil_killer129 asks:Would he have a better chance if that GPA was a 3.5?

Response: Well, any better GPA is better. However, from Maryland, people don't normally get into U Md unless they have a weighted GPA of at least 4.0 and 1300+ on the SATs. You can have a bit lower on the SAT if the GPA is better.

I have a 1310 on the SAT's but a 3.1 GPA unweighted, my school only offers 4 AP classes and has an average GPA of 2.7....wouldnt the school take that into consideration as I have seen people get in with 3.0 and even 2.7 before

Wow. That site was helpful. I wished my school had that, but I guess it would be embarrassing, because of our low SAT scores.

I was just wondering, does UMD look at weighted GPA's or unweighted GPA's?

I have a 3.6 unweighted and 3.9 weighted, with 1300+ SAT, a few clubs, not many notable ones, great recs, average essays. UMD has been a dream school for me. Will I be accepted from OOS? I am from New York City.

I was looking through the books at our school on 2005 applications and id say we had around 8-12 kids get into maryland college park and many had low GPA however if using weighted GPA that would be different and my 3.1 would most likely be 3.6ish

As you can tell from the url that I posted, Maryland wants at least a 4.0 weighted and probably more. A 4.0 weighted would translate to about a 3.5 unweighted with mostly tough courses.

Don't let the stats discourage you. My d and many of her friends got into Maryland last year with SAT under 1250 - (she actually got into the scholars program with a 1240). Her unweighted gpa was 3.8- don't remember weighted. Maryland actually does read the essays and the short answer questions.

Again , read my post number 7, and go to the url posted there. Use the site to determine your chances from instate. Out of state will be a bit harder.

My D. is out of state...low tests scores and fair gpa...waitlisted in the fall but was accepted in spring...(that's still guarentees housing for spring waitlisters) but she got in off that fall waitlist (notified in late May by phone call) and started in August with everybody else! There is more to the application than just numbers and they look at EVERYTHING!!! But keep taking the tests to raise the scores, and all focus your application on what you excell at and promote that. Be realistic but DO NOT give up....she is having a fantastic time at MD.
