I go to a pretty competative high school (in MA). My GPA is really bad though. Unweighted its about a 2.8 and weighted its like a 3.0. I had a strong aversion to homework

My grades:

Freshman year (2.96 W):

English 9 Honors: 80
Spanish II: 84
World History: 87
Algebra I Honors: 78
Physical Science: 79
Gym: 95
Health: 85
Engineering: 89
Computer Skills: 86

Softmore Year (3.12 W):

English 10: 85
Biology: 84
World History Honors: 86
Geometry: 80
Spanish III: 80
Engineering II: 92
Web Page Design: 88
Gym: 95

Junior Year (forget my exact GPA):

English 10: 89
US History Honors: 89
Chemistry: 80
Psychology AP: 75
Algebra II: 70
Spanish IV: 86
Business Law: 89
Gym: 95

Senior Year I plan on straight A's term 1! (I've signed up for 1 AP, 2 honors classes)

However I did pretty well on the SAT, with a 2000 out of 2400. SAT II's are 740 in World History, 740 in US History, 640 in Literature.

I have good extra curriculars (peer counselor, state finalist for speech and debate team, model UN, various jobs, wrestling team, ski club, cross country team).

I'm probably going to major in international relations. I am a decent writer as well so my essay should hopefuly be decent. I will have a recommendation from my English teacher and my History Honors teacher.

Dunno...hmmm maybe not...I mean you are obviously smart if you got 2000 out of 2400 but you didn't show it with your grades. What's the grading scale?--that's what I want to know. I think grades better determine how well you do in college, not a test that you take one day. But I can't say for sure because I don't review applications. I didn't think I'd get in though (I applied fall 07 and got in spring 08) and I had a 3.66W by the end of junior year and a 1760/2400 SAT, and Out of State.

With all AP classes with above 97% you can get 5.0. However the highest GPA weighted GPA in my school is a 4.2 by a girl with a 2400 SAT score. Only 13 students (out of 400) have weighted GPA's of 4.0 or above. 3.0 weighted puts me in the top 50% I think (sadly). Grades are not inflated at all here, as we have one of the top 10 schools in MA.

Is IR even a major at UMD?

Nobody can really tell you your chaces, unfortunately...your SAT score and ECs are of course in the range for Maryland. GPA, not so much, but that really depends on how many kids they are looking for from OOS - specifically MA - and more importantly how many kids from your school matriculate to top universities.

You should definitely apply, though. I was pleasantly surprised by a few schools I applied to :). Sometimes places like CC make you feel like you will never get into college...but the truth is, it's easier than hyper-achievers will have you think. Good luck!
