Chances... Why not?

I guess I'm gonna do one of these so read this ish and gimme your thoughts.

I just finished my junior year at a somewhat competitive school in PA

Stats:
GPA/rank: 99.3/100, 6/510
SAT: 2230/800 M/680V/750 W
SATII: 800 Math II/710 Bio M/ waiting for chem results coming in June
AP: 10th Grade: Calculus AB 5, Biology 4, Gov 4
11th Grade: Calc BC, Psych, Chem, World History - expecting at least 4's
12th sched: Physics, Macro/Micro Economics, Spanish, English
I will also probably National Merit Commended (PSAT 215) maybe NMSF but who knows?

EC's and Volunteer Service:
1. Very involved in Youth and Goverment 10th, 11th and 12th - VP of delegation and won statewide leadership positions
2. Science Olympiad 11th - Won 1st place and 4th place medals at Reigonal Competition
3. Quiz bowl 11th grade captain
4. JV Tennis 9th,10th,11th - Captain 11th grade year will play varsity next year and be co-captain
5. Volunteer at Hospital over 200 hours of service
6. Will volunteer at research laboratory this summer
7. NHS 10th, 11th, 12th

Summer programs and research
1. Will attend PA Governor's School for Sciences 2007 session
2. Worked on original research involving thermodynamics and mathematical manipulations, very extensive, will try to publish in Chemical Engineering journals, and will send to INTEL and Siemens competitions
3. CTY in summer 04-06

Honors and Awards
1. Baush Lomb Science Award
2. President Silver Award for Volunteer Service
3. Best in School for Bucknell Gold Exam (Math Competition)
4. AP scholar after 10th grade, probable AP scholar with distinction after 11th

I have some varied extracirriculars with a slight focus on science. I also plan on majoring on some sort of science so I will stress those parts espicially my research if publishing goes through and competitions go well...

Anyways heres the Schools I'm looking at
Stanford - probably early action
Duke
Brown
Columbia
Harvard
Princeton
NYU
Michigan
Georgetown
Cornell
George Washington
Penn

Anyone have any input?

I hate doin this but no one is respondin so bump

You look like you've prepared well. And I think that GW, UMich, and NYU are pretty good matches for you.

But I have my doubts about whether or not you're strong enough to be competitive in an Ivy pool or at Stanford and Georgetown. By all means, apply to Stanford EA, but odds are you'll be deferred. PA is a tough state to be from, and there will be stronger applicants than you applying.

However, if Intel/Siemens go well then your RD acceptances will be numerous.

Beyond that, write good essays and pick your recommendation writers carefully.

Good luck!

*215 is probably not enough for semifinalist in PA. My 219 was only enough for commended in MD.

yeah I figured that for Stanford... does anyone know like approx numbers for how many they accept from each state

I think you have a good chance at all of those schools. Upper Ivies are always reaches, and I think you have a well above average shot at NYU, George Washington, and UMich. Though it's not as likely, I think you may have a good shot at Cornell too.

Georgetown and George Washington kind of confuse me though, they seem like they're good matches for someone who wants to major in some sort of polisci, not sciences. What about Carnegie Mellon? Too close? Just wondering. :)

I think you might want to add a supersafety just in case. I think that of everyone, though, I'm not saying I think you're a weak applicant because I think you have an above average shot at each school on your list.

Good luck!

I was thinkin bout addin carnegie mellon but I think 12 is enuff schools

Everything looks great, and I think you are qualified for all of the schools. Just based though on the number of great applications that go through the top Ivy League schools, I think they are still reaches. But, then again, they are reaches for all qualified applicants.
It wouldn't hurt you to bring up your SAT a little bit. 2230 is a great score, but it stands out as the weak part of your application just because everything else is so good.

NYU
Michigan
Georgetown
Cornell
George Washington
Penn (except Wharton)
Brown

I think all of those are pretty good matches for your currently

you probably wanna boost those SAT scores a bit to be fully competitive for schools like stanford and some of those upper ivies. but other than that, you're resume looks really good. good luck with the siemens and intel competitions, hope that works out for you

humpity bumpity

Reach:
Stanford, Columbia, Harvard, Princeton

High Match:
Brown, Penn, Duke

Match:
Gtown, Cornell

In:
NYU, GW, Michigan

Stanford [with SCEA] REACH
Duke LOWer REACH
Brown LOWer REACH
Columbia REACH
Harvard HIGH REACH
Princeton HIGH REACH
NYU LOW MATCH
Michigan MATCH
Georgetown MATCH
Cornell HIGH MATCH-LOW REACH
George Washington LOW MATCH
Penn LOWer REACH

How much will getting semifinalist in the siemens and/or intel competitions improve my chances for those reach and high reach schools?

Substantially. It will help more for say, Duke, than Princeton though.

my predictions:

Stanford-big reach
Columbia-reach
Harvard-big reach
Princeton-big reach
Brown-low reach
Penn-reach
Duke-low reach
Gtown-high match
Cornell-high match
NYU-match
GW-match
Michigan-match

Alright so I am deciding to revive this thread that I started last year

I have changed some things like:
Retook SAT: Got 790 CR so total is now 2340 (800M/790V/750W), 750 on Chem SAT II

I was selected as a Seminfinalist for the Siemens Competition (submitted to INTEL waiting for result)
Research is also pending publishing in a Chemical Engineering journal (in editing stage)
NMSF
Got that AP Scholar w/ Distinction
Some local awards and elected more positions in Youth and Government
oh yeah GPA went up after 1st quarter and rank is now 5th

I know no one can really say for sure... but I am still as curious as the rest as to what ur opinions will be
Chances for these schools:
Stanford (EA)
Duke
Harvard
Princeton
Penn
Columbia
Brown PLME and RD
Cornell
NYU
Michigan
Georgetown

Give it a read....

Cmon Someone Respond... ***

People here are too pessimistic. You're one of the most qualified candidates I've seen. Your GPA is amazing and better than the overwhelming majority of accepted students at all the ivies including HYP, and your SAT is good too. Your EC's, if you really have a "State position" is HYP level as well. The papers and internships help too. Here are my predictions;

Stanford - 50/50 chance I'd say
Duke - Low reach
Brown - Low Reach
Columbia - Reach
Harvard - Eh, It's possible but lower chance I'd say
Princeton - Prob. Reject
NYU - Safety
Michigan - Safety
Georgetown - Match
Cornell - Match/Low Match
George Washington - Safety
Penn - Reach

I gotta admit...I'm jealous :). You'll get into all schools w/o a doubt aside from Harvard, Princeton, Duke, Penn, Stanford, and Columbia. For those schools, I rate as follows:

Harvard - Borderline, leaning towards reject (this depends a lot on your school's history with Harvard)
Princeton - Same as Harvard
Duke - 65% chance in.
Penn - 75% chance in.
Stanford -I'll go out on a limb and say you'll be accepted :)
Columbia - 65% chance in.
