Chances with a low(ish) GPA but high SATs?

Hi, I posted this question in the college admissions forum before I realized there was a McGill-specific one, so hopefully I'll get some answers here...

I graduated June of 09 with about a 3.0 GPA (don't know about weighting) from a respectable HS in the Northeast. I took mostly honors classes and took two APs (US History and Environmental Science) but didn't take the AP tests. I got a 2080 on my SATs though: 730 Reading, 760 Writing, 590 Math.

I was supposed to attend Dalhousie University beginning last semester, but over the summer I decided it wasn't for me and I wanted to take time off and do something else. So I took a few classes at the local university (through the University College program - also I don't have enough credits to be considered a transfer applicant obviously) and worked part time. I'm leaving for a three-month 'gap semester' to Nepal and India in February and I have to get my college apps for next fall in before I take off.

So I'm wondering what my chances are of getting into McGill, since I know they look mostly at grades, transcript, etc. Do you think they would take into consideration/appreciate it that I'm doing this trip abroad? Would it help to write a letter of some sort?

Thanks
