Do I have any chance at Michigan out of state? Also, it would be gladly appreciated if you could suggest solid safety, and match schools. Thank you for your help!

I'm pretty sure you're in. Your GPA is low but you've obviously taken the hardest courses so that makes up for it. Just apply as early as possible and your chances are great.

what would your UMICH GPA be?

I'm not as sure as CCRunner. I haven't seen anyone with that low of a GPA get in on these boards. I agree that your test scores are great and that there's no need to worry about those, but sometimes Michigan isn't great at recognizing the difficulty/grading practices of individual schools, so I'd say that you'll probably be deferred no matter what your GPA is, but you're going to have to raise it unless you like the idea of a waitlist or rejection after the deferral. As for safeties, you might want to consider University of Maryland, which has a very good computer science program for how selective it is.

Okay, it's time for me to confess what my U-M GPA was... 2.9... ACT 34... and i was invited to LSA honors... This is not the norm though. I had an AWFUL sophomore year, and improved a ton my junior year. I took a pretty tough courseload for my school (a generic suburban detroit HS) and my senior year i pulled a 4.22 weighted GPA. I didn't get into michigan off the bat, rather I had to wait until they got my grades from first semester senior year. There were some things going on in my life that correlated with my lower grades and I think my counselor made the school aware of that.

Thanks for all your help! Would applying early give them a chance to see my first semester of senior year grades?

if they want to see them, they'll let ya know

Thanks for weighing in. Anyone else?

How about RPI or Carnegie Mellon? I know a few people who turned down MIT and the Ivies to attend RPI because it has a much greater emphasis on undergraduate education in engineering, plus it's easier to get into. Carnegie Mellon is a bit easier to get into than Michigan and strong in computer science, too.

Do you care much about the social scene, campus environment, region of country, etc.?

I have been considering Carnegie Mellon and RPI, as well as Michigan. Social scene is important, but not completely necessary. Campus environment, and region of country aren't too important to me.
