I would like to know my chances at SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, Case Western Reserve, University of Wisconsin-Madison (OOS), University of Michigan (OOS), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (OOS), University of Virginia (OOS), NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Cornell. Also, it would be gladly appreciated if you could suggest solid safety, and match schools. Thank you for your help!

you should only take a lot of APs if you feel you can do well in them... Clearly you haven't done well in them (3.1 gpa), so it would have been better if you took fewer APs and gotten like a 3.7 in them... Don't think that by taking the most APs at your school you're going to get into top schools

But doesn't taking many AP classes show that he is taking a tough curriculum?

Bump. Anyone else?

yes, but that doesn't say much because he's getting Bs (or lower grades) in them...

BUMP (10 characters)

Bump

Please help.

BUMP Suggestions, and evaluations needed.

BUMP
Please reply.

Why the low gpa? Were the courses difficult. I'm only asking because, if they were not difficult I would recommend doing that rigorous courseload for senior year. All you can do now is work on a mind-blowing essay and gather some great recs so focus will be taken off your gpa.

The courses weren't difficult by CC standards, but they were the most rigorous offered. I wasn't too serious of a student until recently. However, I'm confident that I can get A's in all my classes next year.

Also, what are my chances at Rice interim decision? Does interim decision help in terms of acceptance rate? Will they look at my mid-year report, so I can improve my chances? Thank you in advance.

Please chance me, and suggest solid safety and reach schools. Thanks.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Bring Up My Post

to give you an honest answer:

look, you're gpa just sucks, ok? I don't know a single person that applied to ivies or top schools that have that low a GPA... I think you should just apply to mediocore state schools (like vermont or massachusetts)

Yeah, you're probably right. You did cure cancer. I'm not just talking about top schools, I'd like to know my chances at the SUNY system, and Rochester.

probably can get into those if you get all As senior year

Any other opinions?

See my message to your inquiry about your chances at Hopkins for details. Here is the list of schools that I don't think you'll make, and schools in your range. These include "solid safeties." This last list separates the big schools from liberal arts colleges.

NOT IN YOUR BALLPARK:
University of Virginia, College of William and Mary, University of North Carolina, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, Emory University

MATCH SCHOOLS ON THE UPPER END:
Vanderbilt University, University of Notre Dame

MORE OF YOUR RANGE (it's pretty wide because of disparate gpa/sat):
Full universities include: Wake Forest University, Lehigh University, Case Western Reserve University, University of Pittsburgh, Stevens Tech, Rutgers-New Brunswick, Binghamton, and Stony Brook. I include the last two because you're from New York.

Smaller schools include: Davidson College, Washington and Lee University, University of Richmond, College of New Jersey.

Keep in mind that many of the schools I mentioned do not have engineering. Bio and Chem are a given at almost every school however. Message me if you still have questions.

To RSaBach: I was another one of those guys who took all AP's and got B's in most of them (did get an A in Govt though). I obviously didn't end up at JMU, did I? But it is true that you shouldn't take all AP's if you're going to suck at all of them (as in C's and worse). One guy in my high school took 5 AP's senior year, and 2 the year before. Ended up at Radford, after dropping his GPA from 3.4'ish at the end of soph year to barely 3.0 at graduation.

Getting B's in AP's is not necessarily bad however, especially since the GPA is weighted most of the time.
