Does he have a chance?

Go here to see probable middle 50% range (test score and class rank) for College of Business: http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/prospective/ugrad/ugchances.html
Son's stats are on low end, just near but below 25% in class rank. However, that obviously means he still has a fair chance (23% will actually have lower stats than his). At that level, essays, in particular, and EC's become important. The letter of rec won't be ignored completely although it is not likely to be given much consideration. I would say hope for the best but don't be overly surprised if it does not happen.

Thanks for your response. But also how much will the GPA come into effect.I would hope his tough class choices the past couple years and relatively high GPA would help his cause. Also do they look at this years choices also (4 AP classes)?

Most important is class rank and test score, but particularly when applicants are not easy admits based on those, they will be looking at everything else including essay, known competitiveness of high school, difficulty of class schedule (AP's, honors) and grades, and senior year schedule. So do not get discouraged. However, to add to your anxiety, the college of business has a history of sitting on a lot applications before making final decisions so it can see what the total applicant pool looks like first and thus word may not arrive for quite a while, possibly December, but could be as late as end of Jan/early Feb.

What if your school does not offer class rank or percentile?
I go to a VERY liberal school that does not rank
