chances

Hi ,

Hopefully someone can help me. Im not doing so well with finding info on UT.

My stats are 4.13 weighted gpa, 28 act
lots of ap, aice and honors classes.

Im applying for a nursing major and Im wondering
a. will I get in and
b. what type of reputation does the nursing school have.
c. how are they with merit aid? trying to get my act up to a 30?

I would appreciate any info that you could give me.

Is anybody on this tenn site. so weird

Yes, you can almost hear the crickets chirping its so quiet around here :)

I don’t know anything about the UT nursing program, but here is a link to some of their merit scholarships-
[The University of Tennessee: Types of Financial Aid - Chancellor’s Scholarships](<a href=“About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services”>About Financial Aid - One Stop Student Services)

I DO know that UTK is becoming more and more competitive, but I’d say that your current stats are certainly inline for admission.

Are you a TN resident?

A 28 on the ACT is great, but retake it if you feel like you can score even higher - especially as you are a junior. Every point helps with both admission and $$$. The higher your ACT the more options you’ll have.

good luck!

Yeah, there’s not much info on UT. You do have a good chance of getting in, but merit aid may be more difficult to come by. Like timeflew said, their averages increase every year, and they’re already incredibly competitive. Your 28 would be a bare minimum for merit aid. For decent money, I’d try for at least a 30. But, UT superscores and will make a new composite score that will be used for admission and, I believe, scholarships. I think they also rework your gpa. Both of these generally work in your favor.
Also, UT values extracurriculars/volunteering much more so than other schools. So if you are a junior, make sure you’re doing lots of volunteering and are involved. There were two applicants from my school last year with a 28 and a 29 and great gpas, but neither received any merit aid because neither had any volunteering or extracurriculars.
So try to get that ACT up a couple points (figure out your superscored composite) and volunteer and you’ll be good. Good luck!

I did not know about the emphasis on EC’s at UTK. Good info, reefblue :)

hghschjunior, where else are you looking? Have you registered to retake the ACT yet?

Thanks, timeflew. But that comes from our teachers and counselors, not directly from a UT person, so I’m not sure if its entirely true. But hey, why not be on the safe side? :slight_smile:
However, a UT rep was at our school last week and said a 29 on the ACT was the minimum to be competitive for merit scholarships.

I am actually a senior but the name comes from when I started on the site. Im applying to UCONN,UMass amherst, uf , fsu, fau, ucf,usf,unc, alabama, auburn, clemson, udel, usc, temple,unf, and northeastern, pitt. All nursing schools, its tough to get into nursing so Im covering my bases and hoping that a few will say yes. Im taking the act this month and trying to get a 30.

I need to get some merit aid to go out of state, otherwise ill stay in florida.

Wow, those are some big-name schools. I’m not sure how it compares, but UT is stingy with money. I know few in-state students around here attend because it’s so expensive. But, if you’ve been very involved and raise that ACT a bit, then I think you will definitely get something. I haven’t looked at out-of-state waivers, but if they have one, then I would definitely consider UT. It’s a good school (definitely as good as Auburn or Alabama) although Florida is usually ranked at the top of SEC schools (behind Vandy of course). You can’t go wrong with your list though.
Good luck to the both of us! '12!

Thanx reef, I just heard from usf and got an acceptance there. UT seems really cool, looking forward to hearing from them. My heart is with UF, but who knows…the school you really want is the one that says “NO”. Im hitting the books for the ACT and trying to get it up to a 30, will be a happy girl.

Good luck to you. Where are you applying?

Thanks. I thought about USF too after learning about its out-of-state money on these boards. It seemed like a nice school and seemed like it gives out some good money :slight_smile: But I’m sure UF is incredibly selective, huh? I’m hoping to get a 30 too at the end of the month. I had a 28 and now a 29; I’ve just got to raise my pitiful math score lol. Superscored its a 30, but of course, a composite would be awesome. I’m applying to UT, Ole Miss, U of Arkansas, and a few other backup schools here in Tenn. I’m hoping for Arkansas but to receive enough money to attend any of those SEC schools would make my day… And every day for the next four years actually lol.

I just found out that I was accepted to Alabama, you should apply. If you get a 30 they give you 2/3’s tuition and a 28 gets you into the honors college.

I’ve been really hitting the math and science portion of the act. FSU came into the school and they told us to keep taking the act as you can qualify for honors. If you get into the honors college, you usually have smaller classes and nicer dorms.

But think about Alabama, it seems like a great school that is also beautiful and its 50% oos. So…Im thinking it would be nice to have a school where many are from different areas…keeps it interesting.

hghschjunior,

Mu oldes D is a sophomore at Bama and loves it. You are correct that they have some very, very generous scholarships and they are automatic if you meet the test score benchmarks.

I think you have a decent chance, “alot of honors, aps, and other courses” with your GPA of a 4.15 on a 4.30 scalle right? they do that at my school ;p. Hmm for nursing! Thats a great school! Try cornell, its a reach, but with yourr honors aps and nice gpa, you’ll be ok. How but extra acitivities?

Tennessee has a top notch school of nursing, and it is very competitive. The middle 50% last year for admission, not for nursing, was 3.5 - 4.0, ACT was 25-30.

Your gpa will be recalculated. They will take core course grades (math, science, english, history, foreign language) to get your unweighted gpa, no electives will be counted. They will add the extra .5 and 1 for honors/AP courses to your quality points, then divide by the number of courses attempted.

Look at all of these core courses from 9th - 10th grade (they don’t look at 12th). Add up 4 points for each A, 3 for each B, etc… Add all of those together, then tally your honors/AP courses and add to your total .5 or 1 for each taken. Take that number and divide by the number of courses attempted…THAT is your admissions GPA.

example:
9th - 11th grade you had 40 CORE classes and earned:

15 A’s
20 B’s
5 C’s

15x4= 60
20x3= 60
5x2= 10

= 130 (say 12 were honors, so 12x.5=6, and 6 were AP, so 6x1=6)

130 + 12 = 142

142/40 = 3.55 GPA

UF is a great school and also selective. I will tell you that they highly inflate grades when they recalculate. Most Florida high schools do this also and it has become quite a joke. They add extra weight directly to your GPA instead of your quality points.

Good luck! I am actually writing on my sister’s account. She goes to UF and I am hoping to go to Tennessee; I have applied to both. I already got accepted to Alabama and am waiting for Ole’ Miss any day. These were my “sure thing” schools, both are very easy to get into but everyone I know who attends either loves it!
