Stats:

*Nat. Merit semi-finalist, 232

*my brother goes to UF, 3.9 GPA in economics
*EC's- very on-and-off. 2 yrs varsity wrestling, 1 year LD debate, volunteering. not very impressive stuff.

On the one hand, I've made myself look bad with the no recommendations, hook, last minute app, crappy essays, EC's, etc. On the other, my scores are much higher than UF requires, I'm IB, I'll get Nat Merit Finalist, and my brother has a perfect GPA after three years, if they take that into account.

Your stats are excellent and you would get in based on these. With the NMSF status you are sure to get in. UF wants national merit finalists and the scholarships for national merit plus bright futures make it an appealing package.

Daniel, just out of curiosity, what made your brother go to UF? Where else did you apply?

He didn't prepare for college apps very well (which is why my parents got on my case about it). When UF sent a full scholarship offer, he accepted because it was the best place that did. Indiana U offered him one, and they have a great business school, but he a) thought he would major in engineering and b) didnt want to stay in the Indiana. Also, his stats are closer to UF's averages than mine.

I applied at these colleges that I can afford:
*U. Florida,
*UNC Chapel Hill (maybe can afford. sent me the likely admit letter)
*Washington & Lee (if I get a scholarship)
*Arizona State
*Purdue University

and these that I don't know why I applied to them because I can't pay for them and I won't get financial aid:
*Caltech (deferred. no surprise with my EC's and MathIIc)
*Reed College
*Swarthmore College
*UC - Berkeley
*U. of Chicago (accepted EA)
*St. John's College
*UM - Ann Arbor
