I disagree with the excellent chances. I actually think they are rather low.

Not calculating his Jesus & Church, Scholars Seminar, JROTC, or Morality classes, his UM GPA is a 3.2. That's incredibly low for an out-of-state applicant. Even counting those classes, his UM GPA is only a 3.36, which is still low for an out-of-state applicant.

All of your "1-point from an A-, 1 point from a B-" will come back to kill you, especially in the honors classes. UM gets rid of all weighting, and all +/-, meaning all those B+'s 1 point off from an A- will be counted as a 3. It's a terrible system, but that's how they do it.

It's a reach. If you send it in early, you will be deferred because of your grades, meaning a strong senior year will get you in. I've yet to see someone with that low of a GPA get in initially, and not deferred. Make sure you have a true safety.

to the OP: dude you probably want to take that national honor role and whos who off your list...they arent really accomplishments...more like just long lists of people they put in a book...

Chill out Jaw, you have a very realistic chance. Michigan is becoming increasingl7 competitive. Two years ago, Michigan admitted 62% of its applicants. This year, Michigan admitted fewer than 50% of its applicants and this trend is going to continue. However, you are an URM, you have a very good SAT score and your GPA at a private school is quite solid. Your C+ in honors Algebra your sophomore year is probably your weakest link, but you made up for it by getting a B+ in pre-calculus your junior year. I'd say Michigan is a safe match for you.
