Chances?

I guess I’m feeling a little worried and discouraged about college. My GPA was pretty good (3.7) but now it’s dropped significantly. I’m a senior in high school and I’m beginning to start the college app process. My GPA was a 3.7, but now it’s dropped to a 3.4. My SAT wasn’t so great (1820), and I’m not majorly involved in extra curriculars. I’ve been in a Christian volunteering club since sophomore year, and I’ve been in orchestra since 6th grade. I volunteer in the children’s ministry in my church, I recently got a part time job, and I went on a mission trip to West Virginia this summer. Since my parents are forcing me to stay in Georgia, I’m limited as it comes to colleges. I’d love to go to UGA, but I know my chances are pretty low. Also, I’ve only taken 4 APs; I took AP Language last year (I got a 4 on the exam), and this year I’m taking AP Psych, AP Environmental Science, and AP Literature. In all honesty, I’m not doing well in them. I have a 79 in lit, and an 85 in apes. In order to have a 3.6 GPA, I need to A’s this semester, and to maintain my 3.7. I’m feeling pretty discouraged right now, and I feel close to giving up. I know I’m not accomplished or smart, but what would be my chances for UGA? As a second choice, I want to go to Georgia College and State (I think they just call it Georgia College now though), but now I’m concerned about even that. So do I have any hopes for a good college in Georgia? Or do I just settle for somewhere like Kenessaw?

Your SAT is at the lower end for admission for UGA, which isn’t horrible, but your GPA is concerning because incoming freshman are going to have to have between a 3.8 and 4.0 GPA. The other concern is your AP class count, which is low. Usually, UGA applicants have between 6-9 AP credits. UGA is a highly competitive school and has some really high entrance stats. My advice would be to apply for UGA regular decision if your GPA improves to at least a 3.6 just to give yourself a chance, but don’t be disappointed if you end up not making it. Never count yourself out before you even try! As a backup plan, you could attend a transfer school such as Georgia College or Perimeter and transfer into UGA later on. That would be a great option if you are concerned about admittance. Good luck!
