Emory seems like a high reach and oxford seems like a reach
@thecoolboy1234 how so? I have good test scores and solid ECs. I thought I was well qualified. What if I get all As senior year and raise my gpa to a 3.5? What do you think??
@emoryboi20 To be honest, your stats are not that great for a competitive school like Emory. Sure, you have 800s in your subject tests but for language and Math level 2 the percentage of kids who get 800s is significantly larger than other subject tests so the scores may not be as valuable as they seem. Furthermore, most kids that apply to schools like Emory are in the top 10% in their class. Of course, there are boarding schools, magnet schools, and other high profile schools that allow some leeway in rankings. In addition, your SATs and ACTs are not that strong. They are good scores but undoubtedly you will be competing against similar, if not, higher scoring applicants.
What do you want to study at Emory? Pre-med? Looking at your EC’s it is clear you are Korean and good at speaking as well as writing Korean. However, is a korean boy able to speak and write in his native tongue that special? The fact that you are the captain of the Track team since freshman year as well as a longtime drummer is interesting? Perhaps, you could look at Emory’s track and field records and notify their coach for a little boost in the admissions process if you are capable enough.
Raise your GPA and try to get a higher SAT score. Do what you can control for now. Quite frankly, your SAT is acceptable but your GPA is a bit worrying. True, you go to a competitive public school, but how many students does it usually pump out to highly competitive schools? I think you might get into Oxford but I am not sure about Emory from the info given here. Prove your worth to Emory through your GPA and if you cannot achieve good grades in high school, Emory may not be the choice for you even if you do not get in. Anyway, good luck. I believe.
Well EC is all subjective so it depends on the person. So you said you volunteered for 100 hour, competitive NHS member, drums for 13 years. Did you win any awards, achieve anything major Or for the 5 clubs did you hold any leadership position? Its good that you did 100 hours of community service but there are tens of hundreds of kids with 100+ hours of volunteering. And#1 in Korean Writing contest? Idk how big of an award is that. (I’m Korean btw)
Test score wise, your SAT score is average average (2020-2260) a 2120 isn’t high enough to offset your low GPA (3.2 UW). The UGPA average is 3.7-3.97 your weighted score barely makes it in the UW GPA range which shows how low it is.
Also I don’t think it is possible to raise your GPA to a 3.5 even with straight A’s. Probably a 3.4 ish (mathematically it doesn’t work)
@XAtlas @thecoolboy1234 thanks guys i have now just given up on Emory. Do you think I have a chance for Oxford??
@emoryboi20 Do not give up. There is always a chance and you definitely have a chance at Oxford.
@emoryboi20 just because its a reach shouldnt mean you should give up. Oxford is still a reach but you do have a shot at it
@emoryboi20 Wait, you are giving up on applying to Emory based on what random strangers suggested on this website? I think you need to do more research yourself and talk to your professional counselors. I will say that Emory’s process tends to be very holistic, so I would focus on submitting strong essays that describe what you can uniquely offer. Good luck.
I’m an Emory freshman- you have a good chance but I would suggest you raise your GPA as Emory cares about how you do in school more than test scores. Also if Emory is your first choice apply ED, it will show interest and will help your chances
