Chances

Just trying to get a feel for what my chances at New College would be. As I understand things, its a pretty competitive school, but they also tend to look at the whole application, interviews and essays included. I go to a Jesuit high school in Detroit, although I'm far from conservative. I've actually been very disappointed with how close-minded and far right the whole atmosphere is at my school, but that's a completely different story...

Anyways, my freshman and sophomore years I guess you could say that I slacked off quite a bit. I had trouble adjusting to the school freshman year, and since then I just haven't put for the greatest effort. This year (my junior year) my parents are going through a divorce, which makes it even tougher to concentrate on school, but I've still managed to improve my grades somewhat.

GPA- 2.96
ACT- 30

I'm involved in the Christian Service Team at my school, as well as Student Government, and I'm a member of a nearby Church Youth Group. I write very well, and I'm counting on my essay and interviews to help me into a number of schools, and I'm wondering if this would help at College of Florida.

I'm also planning on taking some courses at U of D Mercy this summer, which might help my application?

Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Your ACT is high, but your GPA is rather low. Don't make too many excuses for your freshman/sophomore year performance; instead try to keep that upward trend. If you take the most challenging curriculum possible at your school and you are as good of a writer/interviewer as you say you are, I think you have a shot. The fact that you are out of state helps as well.

Best of luck.
