I was chosen for national merit, so i will at least be commended, I sent my scores to Colgate (CR650 M800 W650)

Hobbies
-photography
-freestyle skiing (i have won a few competitions and will consider putting them in my EC list)
-I play Bass guitar and am in an acoustic band with my brother as well as a full band, we play locally.

My teacher recs. should be very good seeing as I have personal relationships with the ones who will write them
My essays should also be very good, my english department is fairly good about this sort of thing

NOTE my brother is in the class of 2010 at Colgate as an AMS scholar

I will likely be applying ED

Haha, i forgot to include what i will be majoring in...Physics

I have also applied for ISSYP and should be finding out if I will be going in the coming days. I would be one of 50 international students seeing as it is in Canada at Perimeter Institute.

Where are you from? Public or private high school? How many other students from your high school are at Colgate? Would you self identify as a minority student? Will you need financial aid?

All of those are things that will affect your admissions status and are important to think about.

Jamestown, NY, private highschool, my brother is the only person from my highschool at colgate, I am caucasion and jewish so i doubt that fits makes me a minority and i would need financial aid. But with financial aid in mind, the people at colgate when they admitted my brother said something like the expected family contribution would not change if i decided to go there, so idk how much fin. aid would factor in. I am going to pick up my brother this weekend with my parents and will talk to the fin. aid people about this if they are availible.

You definitely have a great profile - I think you should be just fine, especially if you apply ed.

The only reason I asked all those questions is because sometimes they can make a difference - don't worry about the financial aid portion, if Colgate wants you here [and you have a great profile] then I am sure they will do what they can to make sure it happens.

thank you so much for saying that, that I have an excellent profile, I work hard and really dont ask for much back but i do like the occasional good job. So thank you for lifting my spirits during my rather drab and stressful day.

I would say there is a high likelihood you will get in ED even with current SAT scores.

I got in RD with worse SAT scores (but I had better ACT and SAT IIs). You have a really really good shot ED with your GPA. Your EC's are really good and I think if you raise your SAT, it will increase your chances, but those scores are fine for ED. I recommend writing a short paragraph on why you want to go to Colgate. I did this for my RD app since Colgate doesn't ask why you want to attend, and I felt that it demonstrated my interest and I think it really boosted my chances.

will my brother being a student in high regards at colgate have any affect on the decision, negative or positive? And does anyone know if colgate responds in any way to national merit PSAT stuff, since i sent it specifically to them and to bucknell?

Having a Colgate sibling does provide a slight edge.

Colgate will acknowledge that you named Colgate one of your two schools; my son received a letter from Colgate admissions when he named Colgate one of his two schools. I don't know whether or not it has any impact on the admissions process, but it certainly can't hurt to let Colgate know how interested you are!

jrpar - out of curiousity [bc my sister might apply to gate too] what makes you say there is a siblings advantage?

I heard Gary Ross talk about this to a group of parents last year. He gave the stats too ... although unfortunately now I don't remember what they were -sorry! It definitely helps. I would not characterize it as a "huge" advantage, but in a competitive admissions environment, even a slight advantage is a good thing.

I will have to ask him about it when I am down at admissions today. Thanks so much!

^^^ let us know what he says....

my dad was on the phone discussing aid with my brother and here is what they said "we are not supposed to say...but yes" :-)
