I know that Colgate is very competetive...I'm not sure if I should bother applying as I have not visited the campus or gone to an information session, I've only read about it. or . Here are my stats:

4 Years of cross country, 1 varsity letter
Volunteer Firefighter/Ambulance squad member - big time commitment
Volunteer work with curch
National Honors Society
Kick-ass college essay.

Several other activities as well, but the above are my primary ones.

wow; its great how people who answer these are not even in college, let alone attend the school I inquired about. Now that I think about it, these forums are useless because 94% of the people on here are not equipped to answer peoples' questions. everyone just speculates.

it's amazing how big peoples' egos are. HS seniors - people who are in the same boat as I, are telling me my chances of acceptance into a college. I might as well just ask my labrador.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT. seriously. i both love and hate this website for that reason. and its only the smartest kids who post on here, making all us normal kids paranoid.

i don't respond to these because i'm egotistical or think that my almighty knowledge of college admissions gives me the right to decide who's in and who's out; i'm just trying to be helpful to those who ask for advice (like you did originally with this post). after spending a fair amount of time reviewing data and statistics from colleges for my own purposes, i would say that i, and the majority of people on this website, have at least a fair idea of predicting where you or anyone else who provides the appropriate information about him or herself stands in the pool of applicants.

sure, i don't go to colgate, but i applied early there so i did a lot of research on the school and my own chances of getting in, so i don't think that my predictions for your or anyone else's chances for colgate are quite as much the shot in the dark that those of your lab's.

and i disagree. what is the point of we HS students evaluating eachothers' resumes and telling one another our thoughts regarding admission if we all have the same level of knowledge? For example, hoopsplaya and I have probably both read the colgate's stats on collegeboard, browsed the colgate site, and read about it in a guide book, what makes him qualified to evaluate my resume? I was under the impression that the people who would answer these posts would be current colgate students, who have a clear idea of what admissions officer look for because (1) they got in and (2) they are surrounded by people who got in. Or perhaps people who are affiliated with the university would answer.

This is just the blind leading the blind. You all should stop wasting your time showing your numbers to people who are just as clueless as yourselves. That's just my opinion, though. I mean, I've been reading posts for the past few days, and the things people say are pretty pathetic (i.e. "I realllllyyyy want to go to U of whatever!!! Chance me!!!!!).

I would not have started this thread if i knew only "lay people" respond to these.

another funny quote from another poster, which happened to be a reply to one of your threads, (regarding your likliehood of acceptance to colgate) "being an asian girl from ca will definitely work against you."

what an idiot. that's why this site is a waste of time.

Considering that I graduated from Colgate several years ago, I feel I am in pretty good position to assess, although really no one who has never worked in an admissions office can really evaluate that accurately.

In my 480 some-odd posts, I don't think I've ever responded to a "chance me" question. No one knows, and even if they did/do know what the stats were last year, don't know what they will be this year, or what other qualities a school is looking for or what niches a school is trying to fill this year. They ~might~ be able to give you a ballpark idea of whether your stats are in a school's range of reach, match or saftey but not whether you will fall within it this year or whether your essay and ecs will set you apart for the adcoms.

By in large, you can do all that research yourself from various sources and put it all together. Then, if you liike the school, "you pays your money and takes your chances."

The forums can, though, be excellent in giving general advice about what the character of the school/students/classes/area/campus life and sometimes people have specific knowledge you can tap into as to programs etc. That can help you narrow your list of choices of where to consider applying.

ok it is true i am also a senior in high school who applied early to Colgate, and i based my information on their statistics and my talks with alumni and admission officers. However, i was only trying to help you. Sorry that i took time to try to give you some guidance. my bad. o and i know im not "qualified" but who is ? no one except the admission officers in a given year.

Michael9990, I'm not sure what you expected when you posted a "Chances" thread but in all honesty, college students(at least most) do not give each other transcripts and compare them. Asking about campus life is an entirely different issue but current students can't predict much better than your peers, or perhaps even worse as we don't tend to keep track of the stats of each entering class. My best advice would be to visit the campus and talk to people to get an idea of whether to apply.

Okay, I'm an alumni admissions rep and I can tell you definitively that it is important to visit Colgate if you are seriously interested because it's the kind of school that you love or don't care for at all. Math SAT? Low by Colgate standards, but won't kill your chances.
