The 1st generation and 4 years of baseball (3 varsity) is impressive. You should shoot for the higher UCs

*Just write an amazing essay

oh i will, my grandma fell seriously ill (near death) in my sophmore year and i had some teachers i didnt really get along and agree with, hence my lower gpa, but things picked up junior year. Would it help to mention why my gpa was low in my essays?

there's a whole separate part of the application where they give u the opportunity to explain any academic flaws. But seeing as to how you have yourself together the admissions comittees won't mind it. Especially since you have many strong semesters to back it up. Admissions comittees are well aware that everyone has a bad semester or a tough group of professors all in one semester. Its the continuous 2.8's semester after semester that they are worried about. I agree with bbbf shoot for the higher uc's as well, just to see what you are capable of. And to answer your question don't waste your time or valuable essay space explaining your bad semester. Focus on your good qualities and what makes you you, not someone else. Being committed to optimism is the best way to handle the UC application process.

Good luck [:

ok thanks for the advice i really appreciate it.

Lol. I basically got the same scores as you. A 3.46 and a 1780 for the SAT score. Of course, you did get higher SAT 2 scores then me, so then you should be fine. Unless, of course it becomes even more competative next year to get into the UC system. This year was pretty tough.
