Do you have to have sports or leadership positions necessarily to be accepted? Also, would A URM definitely help you out?

Sports? Varsity Letter? SATs? PSATs? (don't know if 29 ACT is a prediction or a fact)

As everyone knows here, I'm BIG on sports (see MacArthur's quote: "On the fields of friendly strife..."). The percentage of cadets with Varsity letters has slipped a little over the years--from the high 90s to the low 80s--so it's still important. If you're active and can do well in the physical events (by USAFA's stadards, not yours) then you'll be okay, but I know EVERY board will consider your physical/sports experience very carefully.

Just to give Glucose some encouragement . . .

My son has been appointed and plans to attend the Naval Academy in the fall. He is Hispanic [from Texas] w/ no organized high school athletics to his name. So, no you don't have to have sports to your name. BUT, he did have leadership claims in terms of Presidential offices, Boy's State, extracurricular activities, etc. AND, he had outstanding SATs, outstanding grades, etc. FURTHERMORE, he worked really hard at the Navy's summer seminar, passed the physical aptitude examination, and had stellar recommendations.

SO, you can overcome a lack of sports, but you should plan on some REALLY GOOD attributes to offset that deficiency.

I did ballet for 11 years and quit senior year to do sports so I could get into USAFA. If I can get in, you definitely can.

I didn't really have much of any "leadership activities" and I quit sports after sophomore year soccer season to do ballet... But I lettered in soccer at a 5A school as a freshman and I did ok (not stellar) on the PAE. I also have the grades/SATs thing, though. Anyway, I'm going to USNA next year, so... it can definately happen. Good luck!
