Hey guys, I’m applying to Columbia ED, but Penn is probably my second/third choice…what do you guys think?

I attend a private, Jewish Day School with a dual cirriculum (which means I take classes like Bible, Jewish History, Hebrew etc. in addition to all the normal ones)

I have taken the most rigorous secular courseload, but my I my courseload for the religious subjects is not as strong

GPA should be about 3.7 (unweighted) 4.35 (weighted)

Math IC: 760

Also, I have double legacy to Penn

I would like to know about Penn, but info about Wash U, Columbia etc. would be extremely helpful as well. Also, I have some safety schools in mind, but am still looking for some suggestions, any advice?

Thank you so much for all your help.

Shalom, mothereffer!

Ma shlomcha (assuming you're a guy)?

oy vey.....

Ha dost. I wasn't sure if you were Jewish or not, but your screenname kinda gave it away. Anyway, I know this is a 1/10000000 shot, but do you know the kesselman (sp?) family by any chance?

Well, by my count there's three of us Jewish EDers. (sorry for hijacking your topic, kal)

Hi. I'm an orthodox RD applicant.

I'm also an orthodox jew...by the way, you're as close to a lock as they come. Just write good essays and interview well.

I'm also orthodox (I don't wear my kippah yet at my High School, witch is a reform one) but I keep shabbat etc.

I too am also an orthodox jew....
the question is.... what are you doing applying to WASH U with such shtark scores, maybe you should apply to YU as a safety instead. Hi Bogey!

If you applied early to Penn, you'd be a lock. But Penn often scoffs at legacies who apply regular - be wary. That being said, you'll probably get into Columbia, so it won't matter.

Side note: I'm also double legacy, respect.

do you think jews are a minority? this girl in my class keeps arguing that being jewish will help her at most top colleges including ivies. even though she doesnt have half the stats of an average ivy league applicant she's applied to columbia ED and even plans on applying to harvard. i just think its ridiculous. im not jewish btw.

conservative jew. being jewish is obviously a minority (<2% of the population of the U.S. in Jewish). Since we're such pimps, however, we're not an underrepresented minority and thus it does not help you get into college.

we are pimps arent we

being jewish is (unfairly) not considered a minority. I think that whole minority thing is completely ridiculous, but being if they're going to count it they should count Jews and other small religions as well.

on that note... http://home.nc.rr.com/keehyun/stuff/jew-heyya.html

religions dont count. someone in some obscure protestant church could argue the same.

also, jews don't need any help. theyre the richest group in america.

im another jew applying ed! haha but im a really bad jew. but i love being jewish. by the way chocoman, we're the richest group in america mostly because we rock at life.

lol. I'm catholic, and I feel so left out right now :(

hmm....im jewish too (go jews!)....but only culturally (like, its my heritage); i dont believe in religion, in general....its a nice little vehicle to keep the masses in check; its not for me....i dont think jews deserve to be treated as minorities (just like asian people)....for college admissions its all about UNDER REPRESENTED minorities, and both asians and jews do not fit the term in all caps

well, Judaism is definitely a culture as much as being an african american is. I agree that Judaism is not a race, but if you have acted Jewish (orthodox) your entire life you probably be experienced on average as much disadvantage as any other group.

Does any other Jew out there think it totally sucks that we have to have a duel sched?

Eh we don't need affirmative action. I think, for orthodox jews at least, we bring a different perspective to colleges but basically we're really over-represented...especially at schools like Penn. Salient, don't worry you'll get points for your dual curriculum....they will take it into account.
