I attend a Catholic High School in New Jersey. I want to know my chaces for attending Notre Dame.

SAT: 1860 (I will be retaking, although I know it is low)
SATII: US History 760, World History 680
AP: US History (5)
World History, English Lit., Environmental Science (taking next year)

I am in the top 10% of my class
Editor of my school newspaper
President of Academic Challenge
President of the History Club (vice-president the previous year)
Lead-Attorney on Mock Trial Team
National Honor Society Member
Science League
Classic and Modern Cultures Club Treasurer

I started my own service project ("The Spare Change Project") It has been featured in a couple of newspapers. I have also recieved an award from my community for helping the hungry.

I play the bagpipes (I know Notre Dame has a Pipe Band). I have recieved awards in various contests.

I was MVP of my school's Academic Decathlon team. I won honorable mentions in Speech and Social Science. I also had the highest scoring essay (on Astronomy) in the contest, winning the gold medal.

My brother also attended Notre Dame Law School. Although, I know this probably doesn't matter.

It is always so hard to say. Just out of curiousity, what major are you thinking of applying for? I think you have a shot, but I definately think that ND is going to be a reach and you should have some backups mainly because your rank and SAT's at this point are both a bit below average. Definately retake your SAT's and hope for the best, but know that it is really hard to tell what ND is looking for at any given time. Just do your best and really nail the essay and I would say you have a shot. I wish you the best of luck! If you have any questions or I can help please feel free to contact me; my contact info should be in my profile or you could always pm me.

If you can get your SAT up to 2100+, and all your SATII's 700+, you will have a good shot. I would also STRONGLY recommend taking the ACT, even though ACT scores are generally comparatively higher than SAT scores given ND's Midwestern location.

If you know, what is your rank? It will help you tremendously if you're in the top 3-5% of your class, but if your school doesn't rank, you obviously won't be able to find this out. I was valedictorian at my (non-Catholic) high school, I and the students ranked 2nd and 3rd applied, only I got in, but that may have been because of higher test scores (I think they both got 29 ACT, never took the SAT).

Your EC's look very solid, and again, if you get your scores up a bit, I feel you have an excellent chance, but remember, nothing is guaranteed. Although I ultimately chose Dartmouth over ND, I can give only my highest recommendation to both schools. Best of luck!

Do you really think that they prefer the ACT? I would say they view them equal or may even lean towards the SAT because that is the number most people seem to use when comparing schools, you know? Just my $.02

I agree they view them equal, but I also remember them saying (and reading) that the number one thing applicants do not do that they should is to retake standardized tests. I think the advice to take the ACT is very good, as they'll look at whichever one is higher on the conversion scale.

Who knows - maybe they need bagpipe players and that would be your edge. But definitely, definitely study for and retake all tests. Get books at Barnes and Noble or Borders to help you - they have several - and I'd buy Ten Real SATs for sure.

Thanks for posting the updated numbers. According to USNews the ones I posted were for the 2002-2003 incoming class. The numbers you see in their guide are always 1 year behind. Because the new guide is coming out next month the numbers I posted are now almost 2 years behind.

As a student from the midwest, I took the ACT (with quite a bit of past experience and prep) and scored a 30. I somewhat randomly decided to give the SAT a shot and without any prep at all, scored a 1400 (780m 620v). That already put me 2 ACT points up from my original ACT score.. 1400=32. So I decided to get 10 real SATs and get a better feel for the verbal section. After only 2 practice tests my score went to a 1470 (780m again... couldnt just get one more right.. and a 690v). So overall.. the 1470 is equivalent to a 33 on the ACT. I recommend that EVERYONE takes both tests.

In regards to the advice asked above.. I say your shot is soso.. you really need to get that SAT score up and try for the rank also. I was waitlisted RD with a 1470 this last year.. but I'm from Chicago.. and I did eventually get accepted.
