Chances?

Applied today...
3.04 GPA - 4 APs and 1 Honors
26 ACT, taking 2 SAT subject tests this weekend
ECs - Club, JV, and Varsity Lacrosse all 4 years, community service, member of church youth group
Out of State from California
Both parents are alumni
2 letters of recommendation

Your GPA of 3.04 (Did you mean 3.40 ?) is significantly below that seen in most accepted applicants. For the Class of 2014 only 25% had a GPA of less than 3.38. Your ACT score is close to the average (27) of that class (Non-Honors Students). With both your parents being alumni this might increase your chances as I do believe UD does give some preference to children of Alumni (but I’m not sure of how much-may only be a factor in borderline cases). UD is really a stickler for the rigor of HS courses with an applicants associated GPA. If there is some reason that could account for your relatively low GPA please note this in your UD Supplement. If not then I would think you chances are probably not very good (sorry). If your GPA is really 3.40 then your chances would be much better, but still probably borderline. Best of luck to you.

I do have some circumstances… I dipped down really low sophomore year and did some damage because my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer that year and it really affected me. My right arm is also partially paralyzed because of an accident many years ago and I’ve had to relearn to do everything with my left arm. So I don’t know if that will help at all, but I still know its a long shot. Thanks though.

I’m very sorry to hear about your partial disability and your Mom’s illness (I hope she is doing better). Did you make UD aware of these things in your UD Supplement Application?
If not please write to them and let them know. Hopefully your grades improved in your Jr. year. Besides overall GPA UD also looks at trends in grades and considering your unfortunate past circumstances if your grades are improving this could increase your chances. Also a very very critical thing for both semesters of your Sr. year would be to take a full course load (5) of as rigorous courses as possible (AP, Honors, or at least HS Prep) in major course areas. Try to get the best grades possible and send your first semester grades to UD as soon as they are available. I believe this would also improve your chances. My prayers go out to both you and your Mom. Good Luck-you deserve some.
