Hi,
I am studying at Edmonds Community College, which is in WA near UW. I applied UW Seattle and UCSD CS Major for Fall 2017; however, my gpa is not great, while CS major at UW and UCSD seems competitive, I am really nervous, and I am wondering if I got a chance.
I took calculus 1 and 2 already, but I only got 2.9 and 2.7. I also took JAVA 1 and Physic, and got 4.0 for both of them. I am taking calculus 3, physics 2 and JAVA 2 now; and going to take calculus 4, Linear Algebra, Physics 3 and JAVA 3 before summer. My cumulative gpa is 3.47, I am very bad at math, and apparently that’s why my gpa is low. UW and UCSD is my first priority and I really want to get in one of those, so can anyone get me some idea of how much chance do I get. I doesn’t really have any extra-curriculum activities, I joined MESA and RiSE program and that’s all.
Oh btw, I am applying as US citizen (WA resident), I don’t know if it’s gonna help. Thank you for spending time and reading my poor English.
Oh One Last thing, I also applied Math-CS as my alt. major for UCSD and EE as my second choice for UW, if my chance of getting into CS major is very low, is there a chance I could get in as my second choice major? Thank you very much. First time posting so if I did anything wrong please fix me.
UW’s typical “transfer” GPA for CS admission is 3.8 so your odds are basically nil.
Can you afford UCSD? It’d be about 60K for a WA resident.
If I were you I’d apply to WWU and WSU, plus perhaps University of Puget Sound and University of Seattle.
You may have a shot at Lewis&Clark College in Portland.
@MYOS1634 I think the cost is not a huge problem for me, and since UCSD is one of my favorite school, I will definitely go if they accepted me. Also, I am very willing to go out of state. I also applied SU, but I really really hopefully that I got a chance and get in UW or UCSD, even maybe Math-CS or EE major. Thank you very much for your reply.
UCSD’s Transfer admit GPA range for CS has been around 3.68-3.92 for in-state applicants so expect OOS transfers to have a higher requirement. Also CS and Math-CS are capped majors at UCSD, so chances are slim since priority is given to in-state community college transfers, then UC to UC transfers, Cal state to UC transfers, 4 year private in-state transfers than OOS transfers. Also why pick 2 majors that are Math heavy if you are “bad at math”??
@Gumbymom Since what I have been told that CS is not heavily based on Calculus, except Linear Algebra, also I really enjoy programming, that’s the main reason I choose CS major. For Math-CS, I thought that even though I am bad at math, I shouldn’t and also can’t run away from it, so I think that Math-CS is a way to take CS classes and improve my math at the same time. I thought Math-CS is not as competitive as CS, seems like it is not? Seems like I am getting no chance to get in my top priority schools, Kinda sad.
