Changing majors after transfer

Does anybody know if it’s possible to change your major once you’ve already been admitted as a transfer student at UC Davis? I submitted a TAG to the school, however I realized I want to change my major. I don’t know how much this will help my case, but I would be switching my major to another one within the same college (College of Engineering) and most of my prereqs will be met except for 2 of them, but those could easily be taken in the Fall quarter? If someone has successfully done this, it would be great to hear how you were able to do it, thanks.

Yes. You just need to wait until your second quarter and complete any necessary prereqs to declaring your new major. It literally just requires a couple signatures and you’re good to go. They even have the form online now!

@PhantomVirgo Thank you, I’m hoping it’s possible to switch. From doing research on it, Davis states that it may not be possible for transfers to switch to another major. However this is confusing to me because it also says that students who have completed at least 1 quarter (12 units minimum), have the required GPA, and the prereqs can switch to the new major.

Here are the links I’m referring to:

" Change of Major

You will be admitted to the college in a specific major. You may not be able to change majors within the college once you’re admitted."

I’m guessing that’s referring to the “No more than 135 units completed” requirement for switching. I believe transfers are capped at coming in with 105, so you should be fine if that’s the potential issue. Double check with an adviser either at orientation or once you get to campus. I’ve never heard of someone being denied a switch unless they either didn’t fulfill the prereq requirements or were over the 135 units, but the advisers would know for sure.

That makes sense, thanks! I actually emailed one of the advisers in the Mechanical Engineering department. So you attend UC Davis? How do you like it? I originally had my mind set on going there which is why I sent my TAG there, but I’ve never actually visited the campus, I’ve only heard from family and friends that it is a good school. My decision is getting tough because I got accepted to another great school and still waiting to hear back from most places haha.

Yeah, I’m a graduating senior. I love it here, and I’ll miss it. The people are friendly, everyone’s so cooperative and laid back, and the campus is beautiful. There’s pretty much something for everyone as long as you’re willing to look for it. The people who complain about being bored are usually the people who expect the fun to come to them, and the fact of the matter is that it generally won’t. Put another way, complaining about Davis being boring says more about the person claiming that than it does about the town or campus.

Have you had a chance to visit? Picnic Day is this Saturday. It’s a lot of fun and I definitely recommend it to anyone in the area, with the caveat that campus is normally much calmer than it is on Picnic Day. Still, it’s a great day to just see the campus and see what different departments have to offer. It’s not something you should go out of your way to do, but it’s worth it if you’re already in the area.

That’s great to hear, I’ve also heard from many that the campus is very laid back and not too stressful/overwhelming which is definitely a plus, By the way, I heard back from one of the advisers and I’m surprised how quickly they responded as well as how easy they told me it is to switch majors if I really wanted.

I haven’t had the chance to visit because I’ve been pretty busy with school and Davis is about a 6hr drive from where I live. I had no idea that the Picnic Day was this Saturday, I’m going to Cal Poly SLO’s open house this Friday and it also continues on Saturday, but maybe I can check Davis out since its on the way! Thanks for letting me know, I don’t think I even got an email telling me about the event haha.

Uh…what direction are you coming from? Davis and SLO are at least a few hours away from each other.

If you do end up coming for Picnic Day, just be ready for crowds. And again, keep in mind that Davis is normally a lot calmer.

From LA. Haha I don’t mind crowds but hopefully no traffic because that would suckk
