When do we have to declare a major? I had orginally thought that I wanted to be a biological engineer and now that I have been accepted I have been getting many emails from Cornell about the program. However, I have decided that my interests lie elsewhere within CALS and I dont want to take engineering classes. Is there anything I can do or do I have to wait until after first semester to take the classes I want?

hmm, this isn’t cut and dry because you’re in the right school, and switching majors within CALS is no big deal, but I can see why you’d want to avoid the engineering courses. I think you should try to contact someone at Cornell and find out about this specifically. if I were you I’d call the CALS registrar and ask them who they think you should talk to about switching majors, but someone else might have a more specific suggestion.

also, someone should correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t freshmen able to add-drop just like the rest of us once that period begins at the start of the semester? presumably once you get to school you could just change your classes to avoid the engineering ones, and if anyone asked you could say that you’re switching majors so your new set of classes make more sense for you.

Not sure how CALS works, but in Engineering, some people get pre-enrolled for certain classes depending on their AP/transfer credit. You should contact someone about changing your major to make sure you don’t have to deal with this.

If you are in CALS, it should not be an issue changing majors, but like everyone else said, it’s probably a good idea to at least see what it’s like first.

You will most likely have to take your first semester Engineering classes, while also speaking to the CALS transfer office.

Thanks for the responses. Ill try to contact the registar and see what I can do. Worst case scenario is me taking one semester of intro engineering classes

are you a CALS student or an engineering student though? I know you can major in biological engineering while being enrolled in either college. if you’re already in CALS, you will not have to deal with transferring at all, and I think you might be able to avoid the engineering courses altogether.

Im in CALS, not COE. So changing between the colleges wouldnt apply to me since I am already in the college I want
