Hey guys, so I'm (currently) a chemical engineering major at Georgia Tech and I'm in my first ChemE class and I'm just not liking it. It's not at all what I expected it to be. I'm loving my orgo class but ChemE is so much different from chem. The major I really want to switch into is Industrial Engineering but I'm having some troubles.

So one of the requirements is to take these 3 classes which isn't really a problem, but the big issue I'm having is that my gpa right now is a 2.09 (very very bad I know) and the minimum gpa requirement to switch into IE is a 3.0. My guess is that next semester after I take these 3 classes, my gpa won't be quite that 3.0. So I'm here to ask what do you guys think I should take in the meantime while I'm still working on my gpa? I was thinking some foreign language classes as I do want to minor/double major in spanish and foreign language has always been very easy for me to grasp. I was thinking of starting French since I've taken Spanish for nearly 6 years now.

Also, if anyone could shed some light as to what IE really is that would be great. I have a vague idea but I'm not 100% sure yet. Thanks!

Check the rules for a transfer carefully. At some schools, only classes applicable to the major you want to switch into would be counted in your GPA, so those language classes wouldn’t do any good.

Can you retake the classes you didn’t do well in? Some schools will allow you to do that and it will replace the poor grade (usually only a limited number of classes). Engineering classes and their prerequisites build on each other. If you didn’t learn the material when you took the class, your future prospects of doing well aren’t so good. You need to learn the material.

Thanks for the response. I took Spanish second semester last year and it helped keep my gpa up a little. Here, every class you take will count toward the gpa. Plus Spanish and history and all these other classes will count towards my humanities and whatnot which I would have to take regardless of major.

But yea I am retaking a physics class that I took last semester and I’m doing a lot better in it. I can only take one more class (without it showing on my transcript; freshman forgiveness) but the only other classes I did poorly in were my chem classes really and one of my English classes simply because I didn’t work very hard freshman year. Those chem classes wouldn’t be really useful in any other major except for helping boost my gpa

I went through something similar - I was flunking out of Aerospace when I decided to switch to Electrical. I would first suggest taking any and all general-education classes you can, retaking whatever core courses you need. If you still need classes after that, see what useful IE courses you can take without being in the major - you might be able to take a couple as a ChemE major, and might be able wrangle permission for one or two more.

More importantly, you need to figure out why you have such a low GPA and how to fix it. Switching majors is probably not going to be enough on its own - I am certain that SOME of that has to do with study habits and similar factors. I switched majors without addressing those issues, and the result was getting kicked out of school and not being able to graduate until I was 30!

Ah man haha just got a little nervous. My study habits DEFINITELY were the main cause of my horrible grades. I have been a lot better with my studies this semester though. I’m hoping for two A’s, a B and my ChemE class is up in the air. Really I just wanna pass it. I’d honestly be happy with a C in that class.

Thanks for the response though. I’ll have to figure out how to get a pass to take some of those IE classes. That’d actually be a great idea; it’d also help me make sure that this is the major I want to go into. Gonna try to take some of those general education classes as well. I know I do have some left to take
