Switching to engineering

I am writing this post for my friend. He is an international student admitted to Georgia Tech. On his application he indicated that he wanted to study chemistry, but recently he thinks he would rather to engineering, possibly biomedical or chemical. Is it possible to switch into an engineering major at GIT? And if so can he do so now, or does he have to wait until a certain point? I skimmed the website for this info but was unable to find it. Thanks for your help!

He can switch majors while he is at GTech. He just needs to keep his GPA high and apply for a transfer. I have not attended GTech (will be going most probably this fall) but I’ve read on various other places and talked to some Alumnis and they said its easy to transfer as long as you maintain a good GPA.

He can call admissions and ask them to change his major and they’ll do it before he matriculates.

Once you matriculate, you get one free transfer from any major to any other major (you can change majors without approval). If he waits until he’s on campus, he’ll use that free transfer. There’s no reason to do that.

(after the free transfer, you can still transfer but the incoming school will look at your GPA and you’ll probably have to meet with an advisor at that school to approve the transfer - no big deal if you’re >3.0, but can be a problem if you’re in the mid to low 2’s)

I have a quick question =)
I’m accepted to Tech for Aerospace Engineering major. During my freshman year, does Tech allow me to take any classes/courses I want to adjust to Tech academic environment? Or will I have to take classes specific to my major in my first year?
Thanxx

You are given electives and you can choose some classes that you want which may/may not be related to your major. They can’t force you to do ONLY those which relate to your major! :P

You can always take whatever classes you want. The problem is that most majors have a chain of classes and if you miss one, the entire chain is pushed back and could delay graduation.

I’m not very familiar with the AE curriculum (an AE student would know), but Calc I -> Calc II -> Calc III -> Diff Eq -> Major Class 1 -> Major Class 2 -> Major Class 3 -> Senior Design might be a chain. As a result, if you don’t take Calc I in your first semester, everything is pushed back and you graduate a semester later. If you don’t care about when you graduate, then that might not be an issue.

Whoa I didn’t know about this. Of course I don’t want to delay graduation in 4 years. Do you know where in GT site or on Buzzport can I find info about chain of classes for AE?

Which major are you doing in Tech? =)

So to switch majors, he’ll just need to log onto buzzport and click application details, then scroll down and click “Notify Undergraduate Admissions”. He should be able to change his major to engineering there, although it’ll take a couple of days to be approved. I contacted my admissions counselor like a month ago and this is what she had me do to switch from liberal arts to IE.
