Change UNC E-mail "From" Identifier

I do not know much about mail servers; thus, I am not sure if this is even possible, or what exactly is going on.

However, I added an alias so that mynewemail@unc.edu forwards to onyen@email.unc.edu. When sending emails, though, people receiving them are given the "onyen@email.unc.edu." Does anyone know how to make it so the people receiving the email see "mynewemail@unc.edu?"

Thanks!

go to onyen.unc.edu and you can change it and a lot of your personal info

do you have any idea what you’re talking about?

This is probably not the solution you’re looking for, but you could add your email to a Gmail account, and send and receive email from Gmail itself, under your UNC account. This lets you choose the “from” address.
I’d test webmail/heelmail to try to figure out a way to do it directly, but I don’t have a web/heelmail account right now.

Yes, I do know what I’m talking about. If you go to onyen.unc.edu (the website, in case that wasn’t clear) you can change what appears under sender.

does anyone know if the email expires after graduation, considering the student graduates of course…?

I believe most schools allow one to keep an “alias,” but mail must be forwarded somewhere like gmail.

I’m not really sure why you would ask a bunch of random people rather than UNC ITS which is available 24/7/365… [Support and Training | ITS: Information Technology Services | The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill](http://its.unc.edu/ITS/support_and_training/index.htm)

online chat isn’t available 24/7, and these are UNC students too.

in case anyone stumbles upon this: [UNC General Alumni Association :: Email Forwarding |](<a href=“Carolina Alumni”>http://alumni.unc.edu/article.aspx?sid=192)

apparently they give you a “@alumni.unc.edu” alias; who knows if that will last, though.

Yes, it does expire a certain no. of months after graduation. I used the expired alias of someone who graduated last year, and now I’m getting all her emails.

ITS is not available 24/7/365. Its available Monday - Friday, 9 - 6. Nothing at UNC is 24/7/365.

^^dude. are you kidding - that’s the only reason i wanted to attend UNC.

says here that you keep it: [UNC General Alumni Association :: Email Forwarding |](<a href=“Carolina Alumni”>http://alumni.unc.edu/article.aspx?sid=192)

tear…

“Nothing at UNC is 24/7/365.” how depressing. i’m taking my money to Berkeley! who’s with me? kidding. my life has hit the dead end… how many drugs can i take before all my cells collapse within some form or another?

honestly what’s worth living for?

hey check it out though. no one cares.

i don’t think i’ve ever truly known myself or anyone else. has anyone ever had one of those epiphanies where you realize you are a lot less valuable than you thought in this world. you’re a 1 in a billion, have i been lied to my whole life - am i really liked.

next mission: where do i find the place to post these valid questions that are received well and result in a responsive answer… ah yes… reciprocity is key!

disconnected from society experiencing life through my own perceptions. does anyone truly care?

end of chapter. next page.

have you ever wondered if people should be loved unconditionally - above stereotypes, mistakes, illness, inappropriate emotions, etc…?

although, what is love? a feeling? an emotion? why should we love someone, and do they even DESERVE love?

what do people deserve and why do they deserve it? how much free will do we have; our brains dictate -to an extent - i suppose everything? right? idk. i’m just now realizing i’m not as smart as i thought i was. well… i never thought i was intelligent, but i’m a lot less intelligent that i was.

thus, i believe we have reflexes that don’t involve the central nervous system and the brain, correct? so, net everything involves the brain. but for the most part the brain dictates our actions involving - stupidity, nonacceptable societal actions

i am sure the ignorance in this post is too thick for most of you, so i apologize to myself, and even more to the people who decided to read this - but who the **** is “whatlifeforme?”

You just wasted a few seconds of my life. Take your incoherent emotional ramblings elsewhere.

dude, get over yourself.

■■■■■■ and bickering idiots in this thread aside, I came here because I’m basically wondering the same thing.

I’m now using HeelMail (basically the same service as when you originally signed up for your Onyen, except this goes through the Microsoft Live network). My only gist is that when I send emails to people, my Onyen username shows up as the sender instead of my full name. Not quite as professional as I’d like. Anyways, I tried changing my display name in the “Option” tab on Heelmail, but the boxes are greyed out and can’t be edited. I even called the tech office, then got redirected to the registrar.

They told me to go through the “Update Personal Information” tab on MyUNC, but that literally does nothing. I’m pretty sure it’s broken / has inappropriate restrictions, because it basically allowed me to change my email address to anything, and the save feature didn’t seem like it did anything…

This is an administrative restriction. The boxes that are greyed are what need to be modified according to my research, but administration has prohibited us from doing so.

I suppose that you could continue to contact the IT department / departments. Let me know if you get yours figured out.
