Deposits ahhh

I decided on a college a couple of weeks ago, and paid the non-refundable deposit and everything because I was so sure I'd go there (especially because it was the most affordable option). But now I've found out another school I applied to/got accepted to is also within my family's financial means and I've decided it's the right school for me, fit and everything.

1) How do I go about informing the former school that I will not be attending? It's a large public state school if that's of any relevance.

2) And is it alright to pay the deposit for the school I'm planning on attending if I've already paid a deposit to the former school/haven't cancelled my enrollment yet? Like is anything bad going to come of this, such as both schools rescinding my decision or something?

1.) Email them immediately.

2.) Assuming you send your deposit and email the other school within the space of the same 15 minutes, no, nothing bad will happen. The other school will keep the deposit, though.

Thanks!

Do you have any advice for how I should write the email? How long should it be and how should I explain myself?

"Hello, I submitted an enrollment deposit earlier this month. However, I am writing to inform you that I will not be attending. I understand that my deposit is forfeit, and I wanted to make sure that my spot was vacated.

Thank you,
